Austin news sucks!! The Statesman sucks! However, I do watch CBS when I watch local news.

For weather I watch the News 8 live radar in conjunction with Austin-San Antonio NWS website. I figure if I can predict the weather as well as Troy Kimmel or Mark Murray, I can figure out the weather for the day.
As far as TXCN is concerned, they do have four Belo outlets, one of which is KVUE. They just use those clips because they really don't have their own news team anymore due to budget cuts, just the three weathercasters.

Yeah, Jim Spencer is really good, and he's done it a very long time in Austin. Some of my other favorites for are Mark Murray on KVUE and Scott Fisher at FOX7, as well as Burton Fitzsimmons at N 8 A.

Even on the internet, I can tune in. They have clips of stories there. They're wonderful stations with good people, including some well-known long-timers.

That's funny because I KNOW Jim Spencer, or at least I used to. I worked with Jim Spencer at KTEN in Ada, Oklahoma. He was doing the weather, and I was a broadcast engineer. He's a really great guy. About two years ago, I saw him on the weather channel and it was the first time I'd seen or heard from him since the mid 80s when we worked together. I sent him an email and sure enough, he emailed me back and recalled our old days together at KTEN.

First I should say that, moving from St. Louis, I do find Austin news stories to not be so "hard hitting". Of course, that has to do with the fact that (comparatively speaking) there's not nearly as much stuff going on in Austin as St. Louis has going on. That could be good or bad, depending on the situation...

I like KXAN myself. Back in September when I had a toll road story idea that I thought the public should know about, I notified KVUE, KXAN, and KEYE. I was e-mailed by KVUE that they would discuss the idea at their next news meeting and they'd get back to me if they decide to do a story. That's the only time I heard from them. KEYE had an assignment person contact me a few times for updates on the story, then dropped the ball once a resolution had been reached for me. Only KXAN realized that just because I got a resolution, that doesn't mean that everyone would be so lucky. They picked up the story, thus having an exclusive. I even saw that part of it was shown 2 nights ago on the San Antonio news (they are about to get toll roads as well). Therefore, I happen to think that KXAN works harder than the rest of the stations to get the real news.
