I am young, married Indian living in Chicago. I am IT professional and my wife has mix of IT and Political science back ground. We are planning to move out of chicago and settle down in TX just because my family lives there. My family lives in houston, we are still deciding if we should setttle down in Austin, Dallas or Houston? I would like to know from other what they would recommend, below are major things that we are looking for.

i) Stable jobs ( should have decent IT firms)

ii) Safe area

iii) Both of us love travelling, so should have decent things to do around.

iv) Upto 3 hours driving distance to houston.

v) Nice to have Indian muslim community around.

vi) Decent weather, not too cold ( one of the reasons why we are moving out of chicago).

Thanks in advance

Houston is, by far, the most racially diverse city in the state and one of the diverse cities in the country. On top of that you have a large international airport there, a multitude of things to do, and are within three hours of several major cities in TX.

I vote Austin. Huge IT down there, and getting more diverse by the minute as all the IT people are moving there. Can get to anywhere to tons of places. 3 hrs to Dallas. 3 hrs to Houston. 1 hr to San Antonio. And all the hill country is right there. I think probably the lowest crime compared to the other 2 cities. Weather is great, July tends to feel like it's been hot forever, but that's everywhere in Texas. And it's much better than Northern winters. Moved from Milwaukee a few years ago and I'll take the heat vs cold anyday.

The only thing I will say is that at first Austin seems much smaller of a town compared to Chicago, but once you get settled in you see just how much there is to do. But to have the skyline, etc that'd be Dallas or Houston.

Will you be taking your jobs with you? Think that will be the main factor.

I was told Austin is capital city and has lot more federal jobs than Houston and Dallas? I thought Houston is more for petrochemical people when it comes to jobs?
