My 13 year old hyper active Dalmation mix just starting to develop that funny hop after extreme exercise. This usually goes away but wondering what products are extremely effective and any Veterinarian suggestions in the 78729 or local to that area would be helpful.

If they help with payment arrangements and aren't terribly expensive but i'm more concerned with my dog getting the right care. I had a great one in NJ but since moving here I haven't had the need to research for one until now.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated in Vet recommendations and how to treat this on my own with products from Petco. I found online anything with Glucosamine and Chrondroltin usually work to assist in health recovery. I've found: Dr Fosters/ Smiths Line/ Joint Care/ and Cosequin products.

I see there's a local vet on Anderson Mill Rd by the Anderson Mill IMT apts...anyone have experience there with the vet or staff.....

Thanks in advance

You could not be in better hands than with Central Texas Vet Specialty Hoapital. Two locations - Ben White and Round Rock. They are known as some of the best vet orthopods in the state - on a par with the clinics at aTm. Dr. Kerpsack did our dog's ACL surgery, and it came out great. We know Dr. Alice Runk at the RR location socially and we love her. We are lucky to have this level of care available in our area.

I'd schedule a visit with whatever location works. Don't think the closest vet will do. You need a specialist for this just like you'd want one for yourself.

Good luck!

If you're referring to Balcones Animal Hospital, I use them for my pets. I've only ever worked with the elder Dr. Woods and not his son. He reminds me very much of the old country vets I once worked for as a teen, cheap and sensible but no frills. They don't keep digital records. My pets are pretty low maintenance (just bad teeth that need occasional dentals), so I can't say how he'd be with treating hip dysplasia.

I second this, wholeheartedly. Dr. Kerpsack did ACL surgery on our dog's first hind leg, and Dr. Runk did ACL surgery on his other hind leg. (He was not a very well put together dog, poor guy, though he was as sweet as the day is long....) Excellent results both times. Central Texas Veterinary Specialty Hospital

Start with the Cosequin. It seems to help mine. After that, there are stronger drugs that can be presribed by your vet. You can do a hip replacement, but I'm not sure if I would do it on my 13 year old dog. But that's just me, because these surgeries aren't all that easy on them. Plus its about $2500-$3000 per hip I believe.

I agree with the CTSVH and Dr. Kerpsack. He did TPLO surgery to repair both ACLs on my one dog, one year apart. He also removed a bone chip in his elbow. If I had to do a hip replacement or any major surgery I would do it there. I don't live there any more, so hopefully they have something similar in Pittsburgh where I am now. I drove to the South location many times from Roubd Rock, and then when I move, they put one there

For my old (now gone) German Shepherd, we used Ark Naturals Sea Mobility strips. He did remarkably well with them and they definitely made him more comfortable. We'd previously tried prescription medications that didn't work or had bad side effects.

Good luck finding something to help your fur friend.

Best of luck with the pup! Ours is battling cancer tumors for most of this year with pretty good results.

From a human joint pain perspective, I took glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM for a number of years with little/no benefit(Haven't noticed a difference since I stopped a year ago). I DO feel the HA that comes in the krill oil I take daily 'might' be offering some benefit to my knees and ankles. I'm pretty chewed up from 35 years on hard-surface tennis courts; but there 'may' be something to the HA. It's so hard to tell because it takes some time for results to show and those results could be from other changes. I'm not aware of any downside to adding HA to the other supplements.

I've only had direct experience with the onco-folks at Heart of Texas Vet Specialty on Old Settlers in Round Rock; but I would imagine their joint folks are first-rate as well.

Thank you all for your advice...I very much appreciate it and wish you all best of luck with your friends too. I know this can be a trying time especially with some of the medical concerns they encounter which can be just as costly as our conditions... :-)
I'll try with the strips and Cosequin...if I need to move to the next level after a few weeks i'll visit Dr Kerpsack.
Sometimes it looks like it doesn't bother her at all jumping on the couch and running, but other times she does that bunny hop and has gotten really good with running even on 3 legs...I'd rather her on 4 of course

Having done a bit of body work in another life, I know massage can be of great benefit. Those are some big muscles around the hindquarters and they can be 'encouraged' to help with blood flow and just a general energy from touch. Might be worth it to find a massage practitioner who deals with pups and get some pointers on gentle massage for the affected areas.
