I am coming to Austin next week, with my elementary school aged children in tow, to visit friends. We will have a lot of time on our own since my friends work and their children are in school during the day.

Off the top of your head, what are your top 5 suggestions for family-friendly fun things to do in Austin and the surrounding area? I haven't Googled yet so website suggestions are appreciated, too.

A few ideas:
Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, with the Story of Texas film, plus IMAX theater. Go to their website and download educational materials before you go, so the exhibits hold interest.

Mayfield Park and Nature Preserve, see the peacocks, hike and have a picnic lunch, or go to the Hula Hut afterwards (early) for lunch on the lake.

Visit the Texas State Capitol, walk down Congress avenue and see the Driskill hotel lobby, have lunch in the 1886 room/cafe.

Spend a morning on South Congress, shop, have lunch, etc.

Go to Inner Space Caverns in Georgetown.

Have fun in Toy Joy on Guadalupe, then go to Dirty Martin's just down the street. Sit inside in the front room at the counter or booths. Try one of their milkshakes, burger and share some fries or homemade onion rings.

Take the kids to Whole Foods at 5th & Lamar, view the chocolate fountain inside and buy a treat. Go to Book People next door.

Our hotel room is Central but I am happy to drive up to an hour (or more for the right thing) in any direction.

So far these suggestions look very fun...thank you all!

My two favorite on my side of town are Old Settler's in Round Rock and San Gabriel in Georgetown. In Austin, we like Zilker and Mayfield. My daughter also likes the Natural Science Museum on the UT Campus.
