I've wondered about that too. Maybe it's a reference to all the money in that part of town

Capitol vs. capital - Grammarist

As a noun, capital refers to (1) a city that serves as a capital of government, (2) wealth in the form of money or property, and (3) a capital letter. As an adjective, it means (1) principal, (2) involving financial assets, and (3) deserving of the death penalty. There are other definitions of capital, but these are the main ones.

Capitol has two very specific definitions (outside Ancient Rome): (1) a U.S. state legislature building, and (2) the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. State capitols are located in the capital cities of U.S. states, and the Capitol is located in the capital city of the U.S. If you’re not talking about any of these capitol buildings, then the word you want is probably capital.

The Capitol building located in Washington, D.C. is spelled with a capital C, but state capitol buildings ordinarily don’t have the capital C (which is not to say that some writers don’t capitalize them anyway).

The highway is referring to Austin, the capital city, and not the capitol building.

I always thought of it like Capital is a place or city and Capitol is a building. But still pretty much always get them backwards. Especially if using my phone or iPad.

Like Austin is the Capital of Texas and the Capitol of Texas sits in the middle of downtown Austin.

Or the better question, why such a dumb name for a road to begin with? A huge PITA trying to fit that on a business card. Especially when you also have to specify a building and suite number.

Fun to try to plug it into a navi manually, also!

I reckon it was a capital idea to build the highway, but to name it thus contradicts the round-about way it AVOIDS the city core itself(AND the capitOl building)

It's not worth it to try to figure out the road naming schemes in central Texas, that's for sure! Loop? What loop?

Not to mention all the FMs and RMs... which I'm told USED to mean something.

Farm Road and Ranch Road. They still have that designation as they go into town, through town and out the other side (now that "town" has expanded to engulf them).

What is the difference between a farm road and a ranch road? I mean I would guess at one goes to more farm land (east of Austin?) and one goes to more ranch land (west of Austin?) but I live just off of Ranch Road 2244 (Bee Caves Rd) and it goes west and I think it is both? I'm not sure if 2244 is a farm, ranch or urban road. I have seen it as all of them. Even on Google Maps it has Farm to Market 2244 then like a mile later Bee Caves Rd then like a mile later Ranch to Market 2244 and then it repeats itself all the way to Mopac. I think the signs are R.M. 2244, but I'll have to pay attention next time to be sure. On wiki it said it was a R.M. but change to Urban Road (UR) 2244 in 1995 but that like most other urban roads they don't change signage for that.
