A good one that I am reading, now, is, The Texas Rangers by Walter Prescott Webb. This is an identical reprint from the 1935 edition printed by the University of Texas, minus a few poems that were in the original printing. It is a very interesting read about how the Texas Rangers were formed, and the part they played in the early years of the Texas frontier.

If you ever want to check out the history of any place in Texas you can do it on line here. The Handbook of Texas Online | Texas State Historical Association (TSHA)

They have some great articles free online.

I've got that one in my favorites bookshelves - the green on in the lower right hand corner next to Michner's "Texas":

I never did finish Michener's Texas....I was truly shocked at how incredibly boring it was.

Michener has always been one of my favorite authors, but this book was a stark exception!

Thanks for the information on Sam Houston--I'm off to see if I can find it in Kindle!
