I wonder if February is going to remain as mild as January was. I'm already looking to start planting so that my plants get a headstart before the 100 days of 100 degree temps starts up again.

It depends on what you are planting. Some things should be planted right now, others need to wait until the danger of frost is gone. In Austin, the average last freeze date is March 7. I planted bare root fig and plum trees in January, although I have to protect the fig if it is likely to freeze (when it is older, I won't have to do that.) Many seeds could be planted now, but not all. Natives should do fine planted now, since most are at least somewhat frost hardy. If you can find out the frost hardiness of what you want to plant, that will be your guide.

Does anyone know a company I could hire to redo my back yard. I also have a lot of dead grass, tons of weeds and would like to put something native and green into my backyard ...

Any recommendations for a company that will deal with the sprnkler system that' already in the ground (i.e. not destroying that) and remove the old grass/weeds and replace that with something lower water/nice looking?

I recommend Carolyn Kelly Landscape Architect. She does excellent work and is a pleasure to work with. She is very knowledgeable about native Texas plants which thrive here and did much of the landscaping at the Austin City Hall and many other City projects.

For a play area, fine, but not for a whole yard. Fake lawns are like cheap toupees... nobody thinks they look OK except the owner.

Can you tell which is real and which is fake?

My husband used to coach football and he said the fields that had the "good" fake grass not only looked like real grass but was soft like real grass too.

I think it's a great idea if it's in your budget. I would rather my neighbor have that than the lawn they never take care of.

Both of those look 100% better then 90% of the real lawns in my neighborhood.

I was just looking at greywater ideas as a result of this discussion:

Basic System - Greywater irrigation - grey waste treatment

Regulations - Greywater Irrigation

Greywater approval process for Austin, anyone running one of these?
