Hi,

My husband and I will be in Austin this month and we will be staying with family in Cedar Park. We wanted to check out Austin for one night and stay at a hotel in an exciting area where we can get a good feel for the city vibe.

Any recommendations?

If money is not an issue...
The Driskell hotel on 6th Street

If more budget conscience...
The Austin Motel (austinmotel.com); located on South Congress. Congress Ave Bridge is where the bats come out at night and everyone watches them fly out.

Are these hotels within walking distance of good restaurants, shopping, nightlife?

6th Street...This is the entertainment district for 20 yr olds. Lots of bars and restaurants, but a young crowd...a short distance away is the Warehouse district ...more of a 30-40ish crowd. The local Austinites can give you details on the Warehouse district.

Congress Ave...There is the Continental Club...great place to hear live music. Depending on your musical tastes defines what night of the week to go there. There are some unique, eclectic stores on Congress. If you want a mall...then you will have to drive.

There is a free shuttle in Austin...(locals correct me if I am wrong) that takes you around downtown.

Use Priceline and ask for a 4 star. The pool of 4 stars is only like 3 hotels so you know you will get either the Stephen F Austin, the Hilton or the Omni. Plus it's usually less than $90, much cheaper than the rack rate. If price is no object, do the 4 Seasons or Driskill.

Has anyone stayed at Habitat Suites? If so, how was it? It's on Highland Mall Blvd... is that a decent area (i.e. to get around and "experience" Austin)?

I wouldn't stay in the Highland Mall area to get a feel for Austin especially because it's right on I-35. I think one of the best areas to stay in if you are planning on exploring Austin neighborhoods, etc. is the Arboretum area. They have nice hotels there within walking distance of shopping and some restaurants and with easy access to Mopac (aka Loop 1) and 183. Seriously, if you can completely stay away from driving on I-35 your visit will be much better.

Even if price is an object - I still recommend the Driskill. The hotel itself, is excellent, fascinating, and a real piece of Austin history. It's also about as central as you can get. I think it will be hard for anyone staying at the Driskill for their first time here to NOT fall in love with Austin. Blow your budget on the hotel and then eat cheaply at the endless options that you'll have within walking distance. If it's a weekend - you should sit on the balcony with a drink and watch the crazy 6th street nightlife from above. Or step out the door and join it.
