*nods*

I visited GC (southern rim) in 1983 and the next time in 2002. The differences were staggering! It was crazy busy and full of people and it was early November. It was developed already in 1983 which was fine but then they added all kinds of shops and such. I'm not sure how those things add to the GC experience. I'm not one who thinks it's awful to have more people visit places like that, but really, is all that development necessary to accommodate them?

One neat thing we did find was a book about all the "accidental" deaths at GC that turn out to be homicides (people getting pushed off).

I agree. That's what National Parks are for...but a shopping center? When I was there in 2000, the North Rim was closed due to forest fires. That's where we planned on camping first, then making our way to the South Rim. Don't get me wrong, the place is still mind-bending, especially once you get down into the canyon a bit.

If the National Parks were really interested in keeping these place pristine, they would limit the amount of cars allowed through there...it's like a small city. Shuttles, bicycles or walking. That's it. Have you ever been to Yellowstone? Jack-asses walking around in pennyloafers trying to pet Bison etc...

End of rant.

P.S. I bought a great book at that gift shop though - "The Man Who Walked Through Time" by Colin Fletcher...and a great hat I still wear today

Phisch -- we bought the very same book during our last GC visit in 2005, in one of the small grocery stores... It was a great read! As I recall, lots of drowning deaths, a few "accidental falls", but my favorite part was the two airliners that crashed into each other over the canyon in the 50's... read that right after we took one of those helicopter tours... then 2 weeks after our visit, someone comitted suicide by jumping out of one of the same tour company's helicopters. Weird.

If you are going to BB, consider taking one of the rafting tours, of for the more advernturous/experienced, a canoeing trip. The GC it ain't, but the depth/width ratio make some of the canyons spectacular. The walls head almost straight up from the river bank several thousand feet in some places.

OMG, can you canoe that thing? Some of those rapids look like it would just suck a canoe right down.
