Hi, I'm going to UT Austin for grad school this fall, and I'm from out of state. I've never been to Austin. So I have no idea where to live.

I would like to rent an apartment in a safe area, within walking distance to campus or the shuttle. Although I want to live cheaply, it's more important to me that I live in a clean, well-kept place that is absolutely roach free (I hope this is possible!).

Does anyone know of any good apartment buildings for students, or how much I should expect to pay?

Thank you for ANY help

Depends. If you want to live close to UT or in downtown it is going to be expensive and loud. Sounds like you want to live in a quiet area. So you are not the party type, and not into "keep Austin weird?"In that case how long are you willing to commute. Buses all over Austin go to UT it just depends on how long you are willing to sit on a bus, what kind of atmosphere you want around you, and what your price range is. It could be anywhere between $400 per month (terrible small place in a bad area) to over a $1000 per month for a modern apartment on the river or near lake Travis. I used to live on Metric which is way North and would probably be a 30-45 bus ride to UT, maybe an hour with traffic. I paid $560 for a nice apartment, but the area was kinda suburban and boring.

Talk to your department's graduate coordinator!

Try the area on the Far West Shuttle.

I don't mind loud areas if it means living closer to campus. I doubt I will have much time for partying, but I'm used to noise.

Well you could live close to UT, but you are going to pay a premium for the privledge, and the apartments probably wont be as nice, or if they are nice very expensive. You could also live downtown, and downtown has some nice places but they are real expensive. South Austin was known as the hippy area, but in these days it isnt nessacarily true. You might want to check out central Austin a few miles north of UT.

Can you afford $600-$750? If you can, you can be as close as 38th-51st/ Guadalupe which is actually in a biking distance and definitely on UT shuttle.
