My elderly neighbor who is afraid of her own shadow has a street light attached to the utility pole in her backyard. Recently, the city came through and replaced the poles and put an even brighter light back up. It is so bright that our whole backyard is lit up like a sports field. I will need to get blackout curtains for the bedrooms as it lights those rooms up too even through the blinds. I think that people can pay extra for these lights but don't know. I also wonder why they don't consult with neighbors first as this seriously affects our quality of life. No more sitting outside at night on the deck, etc...I have tried to find out by calling 311 and COA Utilities but got the run-around. Does anybody know about these lights and if we have any recourse?

Consult a lawyer. Seriously. This fact pattern sounds straight out of a first year property law class that I've long since forgotten.

But, try to talk to little old lady first. Your light is harming our right to enjoy our property, keeping us up at night with the glaring light, etc. Think about how light is harming you and your property.

Yes; maybe you can talk her into getting in a motion-detector light mounted at the house; not shining back into everyone else's house.
