So annoying. To me, it doesn't matter where you live or how locals pronounce a word or name. Pronounce it as it's meant to be pronounced!

It's not Gauda-loop. It's not Manshack.

When I was in Georgia, I lived on Buena Vista Rd. I was often corrected and told that it's pronounced "Byoona Vista." Huh?

I'm not going to mispronounce words and names just because it's what is locally accepted and expected.

Names are a tricky one, however. As someone else mentioned, names should be pronounced as the original family it's named after prefers.

Besides Manor and Buda another one that bugs me is Elgin = Elgyuin

IL has a much bigger city also called Elgin and they say it right

However, at the heart of pronouncing a word "correctly" is the desire to communicate with another person. The best way to communicate to someone is by using a common language. This thread is evident that there isn't an end all be all authority on these pronunciations so there isn't a right or wrong way - it all just depends on who you are communicating with. And some pronunciations are so engrained in our heads that it will always be that way.

To add to the list: My wife works at UT and she says everyone pronounces San Jacinto like "San Jack."
