The last time I had this done properly was in New Zealand. Outback does serve this dish but they've gotten it right only one time in three. Are there any restaurants in Austin that can be recommended for this?

On a side note there is some good BBQ mutton around, specifically at Sam's BBQ at (the infamous) 12th and Chicon.

I'd be curious too. I can get a pretty good lamb fix at Estancia Chursascurria or Fogo (leg of lamb or lamb chops though), but those places can be pricey.

It's pretty easy to prepare yourself, too. Smoke a rack or leg of lamb with garlic, olive oil, and rosemary and that's all you need. It's much easier (IMO) than things like brisket or even beef ribs. Lamb has enough fat and a strongish gamey flavor that is hard to mess up. Surprised that Outback can't get it right, but perhaps they feel a tendency to overcook.

Best place to buy lamb that I've found is Randalls. I'm not sure why, but they seem to always carry it and at a reasonable price. Buying it at other stores (even HEB) gets very expensive, if they even have it...

It's been very good the first couple of times at Estancia. However, the last time I went, it was rancid. Even cooked it smelled spoiled. Took a bite anyway and that was a mistake. I'm sure it was a fluke but it's turned me off from going there for a while.

I always check out Yelp when I'm looking for a restaurant with a specific dish. I looked and found a restaurant I had never heard of but gets fabulous reviews - Fabi and Rosi. Now I am dying to try it. One of the reviews speaks highly of the rack of lamb. Here's their website: Fabi and Rosi European Kitchen Austin, TX

By the way, Costco to me has the best lamb -it's New Zealand lamb and they only sell 2 cuts - a boneless leg and a rack. I never had lamb from HEB I liked - I presume most of it is American lamb. Randalls' is good too but I've only seen the legs and chops there.

We have been very happy with the lamb loin chops from HEB. We have bought them at least three times and they have been very good (grilled).

Twice we have been very happy with boneless leg of lamb (New Zealand) from Sams Club.

Unfortunately I have no recommendations for rack of lamb at a restaurant. The lamb at both Estancia and Fogo de Chao has been good.

It looks like there is a site called dishola that has dish level reviews for restaurants. You can search for "lamb" and it pulls up all the dishes by restaurant that serve lamb. For example jeffreys has lamb.

Moonlady,
What a find! Their menu sounds amazing! If you do go, please let us know what it was like so we can live vicariously. They are definitely shooting to the top of my Restaurants To Try list for Austin. I have to add that their prices seem very reasonable. Prices for the apps and entrees would be double here, outside of Philly. Drink prices are about the same though. Bon appetit!
