here is an article which outlines the various factors that you would use to determine if gambling is net positive or negative. It doesnt draw any conclusions as there is almost no unbiased research on the issue. However when you look at the scale of money given to all states that have legalized gambling, it is unlikely that it would be able to help much.

Nevada has an estimated 556M in revenue from casinos.

I hate gaming and gambling! One of few things that could make me l leave Austin would be we had gambling, I mean what good is it living in a state full of conservative Baptists if they can't keep gambling out?!

Gaming is bad social policy and bad economic policy and it brings nothing but low wage, low-skilled jobs! Just thinking about it makes me want to pack my bags!

I will make alliances with any and all loony conservatives, tea-baggers, flat earth society folks, to keep out gambling. Come on Baptists!! Pull your weight!

I am for gaming. To me, theres no better night then to go out, gamble a little, have some drinks, catch a show, ect, ect.. It's a good, clean, night out without having to worry about teenage gangbangers causing trouble.

Texas economy doesn't need it but it couldn't hurt.

Would love to see a huge harrahs casino in Houston.

I lived in CT before moving to TX. In CT you have Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun.

It was weird the atmosphere you get in casinos and gambling towns. You would drive up to the casinos and see how gambling had affected the surrounding areas. Signs everywhere on how to deal with gambling addiction. Gambling addiction is not a nice thing.

There's also a certain type of personality associated to gambling. It attract a certain type of people. I don't know that Austinites would jibe very well with them.

I am against gambling. There have to be better ways to generate income.

well Mr. used to work in the casino business (dir. of entertainment booking bands, comedy shows whatever for that casino showroom) in the midwest where are the boats are we found that the poor counties of the state got the casinos. Made for interesting living conditions at best. Gave that county something with a large tax base so that was good created jobs another plus, gave the locals something to do on a Friday night. But also ruined a few and with people being on the brink these days that might not be good. Double edged sword that's for sure!

Out in California, we don't have legal gambling, but we do have legal poker rooms. They are actually pretty upscale in nature, have good restaurants, and are destinations for serious gamblers and people just looking for a night out, too. I still can't believe there is no legal Texas Hold 'Em in Texas!

As a libertarian, I'm perfectly fine with gambling for legal adults. If you're dumb enough to gamble away all your money- go for it (of course, don't expect a government bailout...)
