I would like to hear from anyone that can provide me some info about the better housing areas (low to no crime rate) and good schools. My husband is retiring from the military soon and we are trying to pinpoint a good place to live in and around Atlanta. Schools are also very important in our search as we have special needs kids, ages 8 and 14. We are basically just looking for a nice neighborhood with good schools in a reasonable price range. Any help is appreciated.

There are a number of threads discussing these locations--Click 'Search' at the top of the page and enter keywords: Smyrna or Marietta or Acworth or Cartersville---Cobb, Bartow, Cherokee Counties,IIRC.

Also--Douglasville, GA--west of Atlanta or Villa Rica.

If you need to be by a base and close to it with good schools either West Cobb or East Cobb (Roswell) are close to Dobbins AFB, Lockhead. Although I don't think this base is suppose to be open much longer.

There's a small 'Reserve' on Chastain Road up by McColumn Airport in Kennesaw (private airport not military) which is still close enough to east and west cobb but I wouldn't call it a base, more like a hut.

I think Macon is your next bet, you could live right outside South Metro Atlanta, and be close to Warner Robbins and Atlanta. Don't know much about the schools though.
