And I read today's AJC article. That extra tax money is hypothetical. It assumes the surrounding area goes up in value. They misleadingly state it as a fact and imply that they would pay it.

The developer is from Atlanta. His buddies are trying to give him money. The school board is standing up.
No they don't need money from schools. They are not taking any money from schools. Your scenarios of the schools making less money are hypotheticals.

The value of the area near a major development going up is much less a hypothetical than assuming that a similar scale development will happen at this site regardless.

Maybe this will end up as a good thing for those sites in south and west Atlanta I mentioned if they abandon this development. Egbert Perry just commented on getting drawn to develop there and seems like a pretty direct reference to the issues he is facing at this site:

On drawing development to the south and west sides:

"What we need are inducements to entice developers to go there." City departments need to work in concert to coordinate investment and redevelopment, from the school board to the mayor's office, he said.

Funny that Keane actually said that!

On growth downtown:

Keane noted that only 3,500 people live downtown. There should be substantial residential growth there, he said, though hopefully not all millennials. He added, jokingly, "Millennials kind of annoy me."

Tax breaks granted to redevelop former Doraville GM plant | www.myajc.com

Looks like they are getting the funding to connect the site to MARTA and move the development forward.

Great news. But is the TOD plan still the full scope that it once was?

I drove by there recently... brand new big car dealership there! :/

If you look at the plan, the car dealership is off on an outparcel, not part of the main development.

Being an end of line station, all the parking lots at Doraville make sense, and I think most of them get used.

That said, maybe they could consolidate into another deck. There's already 2 parking decks, one for AT&T.
