Hi everyone,
just have a quick question. I am currently a college student from the midwest and am looking to move to a large and rapidly growing metro area to begin my professional career. Atlanta is VERY high up on my list of favorites, so here's my question...what are a few of the safest and most economical suburbs in the Atlanta metro? Like I said, I will be just starting out..

THANKS!!!

First of all, as MANY will tell you here, you need to base your home/apartment as close as possible to where you'll be working. Once you experience Atlanta rush hour(s) traffic, you will fully understand why.

Second, if you don't already have a job lined up, have a lot of savings. Enough for up to a full year of all living expenses (rent, car payment, food, etc). Atlanta has been hit with the recession just as much as any other city, and people still flock here thinking jobs are still plentiful. They're not.

On the North end, Alpharetta is a good bet. On the South end, Peachtree City is, too. Going East, the city of Decatur (actual city, not surrounding it) is nice, and Westbound, Dallas starts to get outside of the crime belt. But you're talking COMMUTES from all of these areas into the city if that's where you'll be working, so you want to live/work close to one another.

Alpharetta is very nice, and I have an office there that I visit a few times a month, but Alpharetta is also pretty far out. GA400 is a nightmare and is the poster child for bad Atlanta traffic.

Alpharetta will be better once they expand the MARTA North Line. As Atlantagreg mentioned Decatur is pretty safe, which is on the East Line. There are even some safe intown neighborhoods, like Virginia-Highland.

Get your job first, then decide where to live.

I agree that you should get your job first, then decide where to live. If you end up working in Buckhead, Downtown, Midtown, Vinings, or Smyrna, then consider NW Atlanta: Whittier Mill Village, Riverside, Vinings on the Chattahoochee--these are all great Intown neighborhoods that are affordable and (for Atlanta) safe.

Word of advice, live in the same county where you work. Unless you love traffic.
Work in Duluth, Live in Gwinnett
Work in Atlanta City, live in Fulton or the City and so on.

I'm really glad to see someone from WMV posting on here, as I have posted on here before that it is a really cool Westside alternative for people that want to live intown.

My husband works in Fulton and we live in Gwinnett. It's less than 10 minutes away. It really depends on where you live.
