I think boiled peanuts are a southern staple, they even have them in cans, and where most people don't like them, that's almost the fun part seeing peoples faces when they try them . That's a tough one. Maybe peanut brittle also? Not sure if that's overly southern though.

Option: You can take one of the bums downtown and put a ribbon on his head. They won't miss one. They keep the mother-in-laws away from your house if you prop them up on your porch (though I'd suggest not using them as a babysitter). Easy to pack, too, since they're mostly unconscious much of the time.

Wow... some interesting ideas. Love the manhole cover idea, and perhaps a bum for the kids. But if I go the southern food route, where would be a good place to buy these things? I work near Underground and hate going there, but I think they have some touristy shops that sell food items. Would a local grocery store carry some of these things? (And by the way, I love boiled peanuts, but they're best out of a rusty barrel up in the mountains!)

How far are you willing to travel to acquire the Southern delicacies?

I'm pretty sure there are a dozen or so shops in Decatur that would have a good assortment and personally I think shopping would be easier/better there than searching downtown or Buckhead.

There are probably a number of places in VA Highland that carry the same sort of things.

I would think if it's food especially it might be easier to ship it as opposed to taking it on the plane. When I travel I try to ship as much as possible.

I finally recalled the name of the shop in Stone Mountain that has some nice ceramic/clay--very Georgian--pieces. I think you can order online. I've purchased several different pieces featuring dogwoods that would be easy to pack and carry on a plane--if you are indeed traveling by plane.

Southern Artistry Gallery - in historic Stone Mountain Village

The website doesn't show much of the inventory but I've purchased 4" flat dogwood blossoms, jewelry and a flat piece to hang on the wall. Everyone seems pleased.
