The video only gambling is a horrible idea. A full fledged casino is the only way to go but I don't think that is a good idea for this city either.

^^^Assuming it's an all out casino, why don't you think it'll be a good idea? They would have security patrolling the area.

I enjoy a good casino trip here and there to Vegas or wherever. I'm really not opposed to casinos for certain areas/cities.

My concern is that casinos are very depressing places and create a depressing environment around them. Vegas masks this well but other areas with casinos give the real glimpse of what the area will become. I could be wrong but I believe it's not a smart idea for Atlanta and could stunt the potential redevelopment of Underground. Underground has struggled for a long time. But, we can't count out the redevelopment of this area like others have experienced by throwing in the towel.

Putting up a casino sounds like a great idea in theory with regards to revitalizing the area and tax revenues but I believe there is much more than meets the eye.

^I agree, ramblinwreck17.

Has anyone here seen the way Harrah's is set up in Downtown New Orleans? I have only seen pics, but it seems to be done pretty well. Just curious if this may be used as an example for Atlanta.

Not a good idea, as NO is already a depressing place as it is....

LOL! I agree, and I haven't been back since Katrina.

I really can't think of nice, classy casino in an urban setting. I know they have them in Downtown Detroit, and I hardly want us to emulate them either.

Uh, yeah...Detroit is not one of the "good examples". It's like Mad Max in downtown Detroit.

Wow, had I seen this thread before I created mine, I wouldn't have wasted my time. I have questions:

Is Nevada the only state with legalized gambling on state soil or not? I am aware that there are casinos in Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, New Orleans, Atlantic City, Detroit, Nashville and some other places, BUT I've been told that those places all have their casinos built either on Indian/Native American land (which is not considered US owned land) or built over water which falls outside of state jurisdiction. Is this a true statement or not?

If it is, does that mean that a casino at Underground would be the first legalized on US soil outside of Nevada?

That Harrah's is located near the intersection of Bourbon and Canal, in a area near the waterfront that was seedy before the Casino and adjacent Convention Center went in. It has done much to raise up the area, just as I believe a Harrah's by Underground would do. Also, the Casino keeps its' own security on the perimeter of the Casino...it feels quite secure walking there from Bourbon.
