Why does a casino create a depressing atmosphere? Because people are losing money? Can it be done in Vegas fassion where the focus is more on adult entertainment by adding the lights, showcases, convention space, theaters, mall space, elegant hotel rooms, etc...? Or is that out of Underground's reach?
I would probably say that the jobs generated from these Casinos aren't high paying so the economic effect for the communities surrounding them are very negligible, especially if the cost of living in those areas are too high. It's about the same for the Football stadiums. Rarely will the communities benefit from either of these enterprises. My humble opinion of course...

It won't be Vegas because it will be the only game in town. Vegas is over the top because of the competition for business. This is will be ugly and worse - most likely just filled with one way ATMs, with no real casino games to be played.

It's crap and will not get enough out of town dollars to be with it - so all the city will end it with is all of the baggage instead of any of the benefits.

If they aren't going to have any REAL tables or anything, I think I may agree with you on this one. It seems like they are making more of a "sideshow" for the attractions that are already there. Like just some place to hang out during your night long, lay-over or business trip. Not a real destination.
Maybe that'll work for it if it is marketed that way... For people on business trips and convention goers to have something to do in the night hours.

Overall, it's a risky investment if they aren't planning on going all out with the idea.

For everyone who is scared, this is how it will look. Similiar to Dover Down in Delaware
I am a Delaware native born & raised, and I am coming to live in Atlanta starting mid summer. I live in Wilmington, Dover is our capital but it's in lower slower Delaware. The real city atmosphere, urban life and real activities of our city is in the New Castle County. Which includes Wilmington, Newark, New Castle ETC and we're only 12 mins away from Philly.

Back to subject, their is also Delaware Park, which in it's self is the same thing as Dover Downs just twice as big in Wilmington. Delaware Park Horse Racing and Slots - Home, yes it's only really slots, and machine texas hold em, black jack and poker. But it fills the void of not being in a big city casino, and it brings the people out. In my gambling hey day which was about last year, I would go to Delaware Park or some nights drive 45 mins down Dover and go to Dover Downs and the place will be packed. It's not a complete dump ground like some of you are thinking it will be, it will be a great place to have fun, good restaurant inside drinks etc. I been to Underground Atlanta, and trust their doing you guys a big favor by doing this, it isn't Vegas or AC but it will do it's part of bringing in revenue and fun factor to the city. This makes me feel a bit more comfortable moving to Atlanta, knowing I can get my black jack on at the machines any time I want. YIPPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The sad fact that Atlantans get through their head is people DON"T VISIT ATLANTA FOR LEASURE. They Visit New Orleans more for leasure than Atlanta. The vast MAJORITY of people who will be in this casino will be LOCALS and BUMS.

Yes, Atlantic Station I have noticed some tourists but MAINLY they are are people from the region who drived through.

Where the hell are all these suburbanites going to park? They will need to build more parking definitely.

Underground has sufficient parking, there are two huge decks above it and multiple lots around. No more parking is needed, us urbanites prefer they take MARTA.

I agree; it needs to be all or nothing...otherwise, it will be a joke.

Default My daughter's condo a five minute walk from where they are building it...

My daughter is putting her condo on the market. I don't know if a casino that close will be good or bad for her in trying to sell. K

If this were an all-nude revue, I still think it could be nothing but an improvement for Underground. The place is more than gritty--it's downright dangerous and an unnecessary financial burden on the city.
