My hubby and I are thinking about moving to Atlanta. He spent his college days in Florida 10 years ago and loved it; I love the heat. He can work from home; I'm a teacher and would be looking to teach at a community college or private H.S. We would need to live somewhere quiet and not too close to farms (he has issues with noises & smells) but where we could get to entertainment within an hour's drive. Normally, relatively modern suburbs are a good fit for us. We're hoping to get at least a 3-BR but hoping to spend less than $300k ($350K at most). No kids.

Any suggestions are immensely appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Since your husband works from home, YOU need to secure employment first before anyone can tell you where to live. There are plenty of community colleges, however, while enrollment is rising, hiring of full time or even adjuncts is not. It greatly depends on what you plan on teaching. Since you posted this same question in several threads, have you considered Houston, since you love the heat and quiet suburbs?

Thanks to all. From what you're saying, perhaps Atlanta isn't the place for us. It sounds like Raleigh would be a better fit (in spite of the cold winters, sigh) from what the people on that forum have said. I really appreciate your input!

Wait! Wait! Don't let what we said scare you off so fast! Come baaaaack!

Seriously though, I think Raleigh's and Atlanta's climate are virtually identical. So don't worry about anything lost there.

And despite the fact that with last yrs. election results I will never again be a doubter of North Carolina's pre-eminence over Georgia as a progressive and forward-thinking southern state, I still think it's a mistake to lump metro Atlanta in with Georgia.

One thing is for sure though: without question Atlanta is far closer to DC in size, congestion, and pace of life than Raleigh-Durham, which is prob. like Atlanta about 35 yrs ago (not to imply that all cities are on one and the same curve, of course. )

Come on down! Yes, you can find nice houses in excellent neighborhoods in the city, or very close (inside the I-285 perimeter). Forget the 'burbs, and their traffic, strip malls, and sprawl.

The housing and job markets are down, but not as much as other cities. Atlanta is still growing, and most of the new development is inside the perimeter. Beautiful older neighborhoods with mature trees, and sidewalks, so you can walk to parks, stores, or restaurants. Of course, the better the neighborhood, the higher the home prices. Like in any city, do your research.

Yes, it can get hot and humid here, but no worse than DC. Winters are usually mild (except this week ;-)). The north GA mountains are only an hour away with great wilderness areas, hiking and fishing. Oh, btw; if you like to travel, we have a great airport.

Atlanta has good neighborhoods and bad. You have to know where to live. I live in the Mableton area, 11 miles from town, and very convenient to everything. Lots of new subdivisions and prices are very affordable. Plenty of good restaurants and entertainment. I feel very safe here.
