If there where major casinos in downtown, then nobody would choose to stay at the newly developed hotels in Midtown and buckhead. Changing laws like that all of a sudden is dangerous.

That makes absolutely no sense at all. The hotels in Midtown and Buckhead could very well see an increase in roomnights by people not wanting to be anywhere near the casinos.

There are two sides to every story.

See, when you build a new casino/hotel, which would have to be done to make a casino/hotel downtown, then the other hotels in the area would suffer, because SOME of those customers will choose the hotel/casino over the regular hotel.

SOME people who come here to visit the aquarium may choose to stay in a casino/hotel instead of the Marriot Marquis or whatever.

Make sense now? There ARE two sides to it, but I personally think that it would be unfair to the existing hotels.

For example, Donald Trump would be pissed because he would have lost an opportunity and instead wasted his time/money on a boring two-building condo.

The same goes with alcohol with changing laws all of a sudden. Look at all the businesses that suffered because of the 2:00 am last call.

Societies can change/adapt for the overall good, but drastic change in laws can be damaging and unfair to many.

No, it doesn't make sense now. The large majority of visitors to Atlanta are here to conduct business or attend a convention/conference/trade show. Tourism is a very small part of the total numbers, especially for Downtown hotels.

And I could care less if Donald Trump gets pissed about anything. He is a bad fit for Atlanta to begin with, and I predict his condo towers will never break ground.

It is your opinion that getting a casino would be unfair to the existing hotels. I bet you 99.9% of the hotels in Downtown Atlanta would welcome a casino with open arms.

Well I just returned from Reno/Tahoe and we stayed in Reno for one night so we could be close to the airport for our early flight and we sure as Hell weren't going to stay in anything but a casino/hotel.

If I were here for a conference or for layover It would be the same.

Marriot Marquis could possibly refurbish to convert its lobby to casino if they wanted to, but the design fees would be high. In the end, you would have older hotels having to compete with newly built casinos, and to refurbish to a casino, the design fees would be high, like all refurbishments typically are.

That's capitalism. Sink or swim.

I personally can't wait for all the poor uneducated to vacate the city and move to the suburbs. Casinos would attract the opposite of the type of people that are desirable...

We used to hit the Mystic Lake Casino (http://www.mysticlake.com/index.html - broken link) in Shakopee once or twice a year for the buffet, which was very very very good.

I don't think anyone is talking about turning Downtown Atlanta into Vegas. We are talking about centralizing the casinos in Underground Atlanta or the Gulch and maybe allowing slot machines in hotels. This would probably create an overflow of conventioners forced to stay in Midtown or Buckhead, not the opposite.

Atlanta needs more entertainment downtown. Our convention business has dramatically decreased in the past few years due to the economy and increased competition from other cities. Tourist-generated income is a type of "green" income. They visit, spend, and leave.

For those wanting the casino experience without the expense, there's always the opportunity to attend or host a casino party. Atlanta has a great company that does this - Funtastic Events. Funtastic Events Inc
