I paid my property tax earlier in Oct, both for Fulton Co. and the City of Atlanta on my small condo, estimated worth $50K. My tax was around $2K. Today, I received another bill from the Commissioner asking for another $700 or so because now they said my property is actually worth around $70K (the market value is around $172K).

Has this happened to anyone? Can I fight it? This is unacceptable.

Thanks.

Certainly you can appeal it - they probably included all the appeal information with you letter. However, for $700 it may not be worth your effort. Search this forum for a Fulton County property tax thread and you can find the details of my painful and prolonged appeal with Fulton County!

Thanks. But why do they do this? Can't they get it right the first time? My previous tax was around $2K and I just don't understand the increase.

Yes - unfortunately they can increase your taxes whenever they want with little "real"
justification. If you are still under market value, you will have very little argument unless your appraisal is out of sync with neighboring "comps". I know... it isn't fair.
