For her birthday, the wife wants to go to Stone Mountain tomorrow for the day. Including, going to the lakeside (buffet) restaurant at Evergreen Resort.

She wants to do the paddle boats, and all that jazz.

Hey, is the laser show better than it used to be? I thought it was kind of cheesy when we attended a few years ago.

Thanks!

Still pretty cheesy. I went in July. But the kids liked it!

I think Cheesy is putting it rather lightly.

Overall, a fun day. We bought the ($25) day passes and ended up going on the tram, touring through the antebellum plantation/farm, and the history/art center. Didn't want to pay the extra $8.50 (?!?!) for the duck boat, but in hindsight wished we had. The sternwheeler was closed for the day. Sure wished we would have noticed that (small) sign indicating such when we were paying for our passes.

We had a VERY nice dinner at The Commons restaurant, which is located in the Stone Mountain Golf clubhouse. We dined outside on a deck with wonderful views of the mountain, lake, and a magnificent sunset on a georgeous evening. The food was a bit overpriced, yet scrumpcious. A little over $100 (including tip) for two......which included a glass of wine for my wife, 2 beers for me, a delicious (shrimp, scallops) combination appetizer, chicken pasta for her, and a wonderful combination andalucia sausage, chicken, and shrimp pasta along with a separate house salad for myself.)

Anyhoo, the laser show was OK......just OK. We arrived from dinner just as the show was about to begin. There was no...and I mean NO place to sit! We ended up just scrunching in back up near the Hall. Saw about a 25-minute show. I was tired from the day and was nodding off a bit.

They added another escape route (to 78) out of there which helped tremendously! I remember how long it used to take getting out of the park....the long single line, but this time was a breeze. I'd say about 10 to 15 minutes to 78 from the time we got in our car. That was a sweet surprise.

My wife had a blast, so it was all worthwhile. *heart*

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

So glad you enjoyed it! I've been to the laser show every year since it began and even though it is cheesy always enjoy it. Now it is more about tradition than the actual show.

Glad you had fun!!
We go every year...bring fried chicken and glow necklaces for the kids. It's not classy..but it's fun! The smell of sweaty kids and bug spray, LOL.

We did the Sky hike with our kids this summer - SO much fun!!
Again, glad you guys enjoyed yourselves!

Hey guys - I see that this thread is rather old. Is the laser show still cheesy?

If so, what would you all suggest for something to do this Sunday evening (5/30) that doesn't cost a lot of money? Something outdoors where we can bring picnic baskets.

Does anyone know of any free outdoor concerts or Shakespeare/plays in a park? We will have vehicles so driving to an event isn't a big deal.

I don't know how the laser show is these days, but you might want to know that the big lawn in front of the mountain is currently under construction/repair, and large portions of it are fenced off. I was there yesterday for a hike. It looks like a big mess.

The Atlanta Jazz Festival will be taking place on the 29th and 30th at Piedmont Park. It's free, and picnic baskets are welcome.

I thought about this even though I'm not a huge jazz fan. I tried navigating their site and couldn't figure most of it out. Is this event free?

I wish that site had an FAQ section.

edit - DUH, I found it.

That's the hill they use for Snow Mountain, so it's likely still trashed from having all that snow on it for a few months.
