I used to be so known for doing things for folks who needed a hand, but I'm beginning to think the next time a hurricane hits the Gulf, I'm going to start putting sand bags on the roads coming into town.

No worries, Greg...just a quick visit, a few smash n' grabs, and they'll be on their way.

How is that a "robbery"? . I'm not saying they weren't scumbags, I'm just saying the media wants to blow things up a little bit more than warranted...

Ya know last time (2005) I spent a month or more collecting clothes, usuable articles ... and especially proud that I went to EVERY Kroger in/around Atlanta. Received donations of dog/cat/bird/pet food/seed/kibble for pets left homeless in Gulfport, MS and surrouding area(s) since I was able to ship everything there 'no charge'.

THIS INCIDENT is disgusting. Why don't they send these people (like Mayor Nagin suggested) to prison? We have a FINE, still-operating electric-chair down in Butts County? Time to warm that thing up?

Well, last time around (Katrina) I donated clothing to the trucks that were shipping them out, and donated money to the Red Cross - only later to watch the reports of people using that money to buy Xbox systems and big screen TVs at Wal-mart with the debit cards given to them.

I then for months got to hear about all of the victims who were in New Orleans (many of whom had lived on tax payer dollars their whole lives), while even now, years later, barely any time has ever been given to the tens of thousands of other people all along the Gulf Coast who suffered as much or worse, but were really the ones who were forgotten. Then came the crime reports of people with "New Orleans I.D. cards" committing crimes throughout the metro Atlanta area. I guess at some point something in my brain just snapped and I stopped giving a crap.

There is no doubt that there are many legit victims whenever something like this hits who have to evacuate to other cities. But I'm getting to the point where I'm thinking that when *anything* happens in New Orleans, we need to put sand bags and military road blocks up along I-20 and just adopt a, "Keep moving - there's nothing for you here" stance. When hurricanes hit other cities and people evacuate here, you never hear of surges in crime. What is it about New Orleans? Is the place just one huge cesspool of human trash waiting to spread out and do crime at any excuse?

Sorry - I just get ticked when people think they can evacuate into a city due to a disaster, and commit crimes in that host city. Knowing they'll be back out on the streets in 1-3 years max doesn't help.

How did people, who were not from Atlanta, know what stores carried these high end jeans? Makes me wonder if the Blue Jean Bandits all started with Katrina refugees.

The problem is that the government doesn't have the resources to screen and find out who really needs the money. Unfortunately, to help a large number that really do need it, some people that don't get helped as well. It's better than some people starving to death until they can find a better way to determine who needs it, and even if they do there will still be victims who do need the money but don't get it.

Sounds like the sentiments of Atlanta and Houston are the same! That storm devastated more than one city that's for sure.
