I was a little skeptical of this when first reported by the Atlanta Business Chronicle last week, but after searching a lot of industry sources and follow-up articles it appears this might actually be true:

Marvel's "Avenger's: Infinity War" (now in production) and it's unnamed sequel will occupy all 18 sound stages at Pinewood Studios in Fayetteville for most of this year. Estimated combined budget of the two films is reportedly close to $1 BILLION. If this is accurate, the Avengers franchise will easily eclipse the estimated budgets of the most expensive films made in recent years, such as "Avatar," "Pirates of the Caribbean," and the "Star Wars" films.

It's not that hard to believe: "Captain America: Civil War" (filmed at Pinewood in 2015) was the highest-grossing film of 2016, earning $1.2 BILLION worldwide. And two Marvel movies shot at Pinewood in 2016 and due for release this year -- "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" and "Spider-Man: Homecoming" -- stand a good chance of finishing at the top of the 2017 box office as well.

Also, the "Avengers" films literally have a cast of thousands -- dozens and dozens of A-list (big budget) stars are currently on the lot down in Fayetteville, and will be for most of this year.

Needless to say, little ol' Fayette County, Georgia is ground zero for the hottest film franchise going anywhere in the world right now -- and the world is taking notice! Good stuff! Good times! The return on the state's entertainment tax incentive program has clearly been enormous.

Here's the orginal story in the Biz Chronicle and links to other stories that are reporting the same thing:

How is it a waste of money if they profit off of it and employ thousands while doing it?

so by definition, nothing that creates jobs and profits can be a waste of money?

Depends on the perspective.

From the corporation's perspective, it is not a waste if their investment returned a profit.

You might say from a societal/social perspective you view a large expenditure on such a movie as a misplaced priority, but if that's the case you are equally judging the population of moviegoers' choice to see this particular movie as much as you are the corporation that incurred this expense to make it.

I'm certain Disney, which is the financial backer of these Marvel films, wouldn't be making the investment if they didn't expect a huge return. The Marvel superhero franchise is the hottest thing in the film business right now -- literally worth billions and billions of dollars cumulatively when you include all titles, memorabila, marketing, etc. And the fact it is all taking place here in Metro Atlanta is just icing on the cake.

The success of Pinewood Studios has created a housing boom down in Fayette County. The fast-rising Pinewood Forrest "movie city" going up across the road from the studio main gates represents another investment of nearly $1 billion -- hotels, retail, offices, dining, housing, lofts, etc.

How is any of this a "waste of money?"
