I am moving to Atlanta in the next couple of months. I have a question about the excise tax on cars. Is there any advantage to buy a used car right after my birthday, in terms of the excise tax? My understanding from what I read is that if I buy it right after my birthday, my tax will not be due for a whole year. Is this correct?

Thanks for the info.

That's correct- the taxes come due on your birthday, so if you buy right after, you've got 11 months to get ready for that bill. BTW- the taxes aren't as crazy as people make them out to be some times- for a 2005 Ford Freestyle and a 2005 Dodge Magnum (each around $35k new), the tax in Cherokee County was under $500 combined. While it's still $500 and I can think of plenty of better things to do with it, I'll take that and my $3k property tax bill over the $65/car registration fees and $6k in taxes on 1/3 of the house in NJ that I left behind any day.....lol.

The correct term in GA is ad valorem taxes. If you have a car registered in GA on your birthday - you will owe taxes on the value of that vehicle. So if you move to GA and register your current car pre-your birthday - you will still have to pay something if you own a car. So you can time buying a new car until after your birthday and not have to pay taxes on the increased value until the following year.

Fulton County taxes are a bit higher than BobKovacs mentioned for Cherokee County, but still not terrible. We had an 2003 VW and paid about $250 and a 99 Nissan and paid about $75 last year.
