GDOT Finds Support For $2 Billion Truck-Only Lanes

Looks like they're moving forward with the idea. At least they're moving forward with the conceptual stuff.

It really is disgusting that spending a few million for transit in this state is like pulling teeth, but they have no hesitation throwing billions at the roads.

God forbid we try and upgrade the rail network.

They cite the Savannah Port expansion as a reason for these, when the NS line from Macon to Savannah is already at capacity. That is, its capacity is much lower than the Atlanta to Macon line, but most of the traffic is Port of Savannah -> Atlanta inland ports.

We could take all this money, get federal backing from the FTA via TIGER, FASLANE, and other grants, and then go to NS and broker a deal to double track the whole line, at least between Macon and Savannah, and maybe between Atlanta and Macon. Maybe we'd even have some money left over to rebuild Howel Y? Who knows?

Well, maybe not since it's gas-tax money, but I get the feeling we could scrounge up the funding if we took all this gas tax money and settled all the other general funding going to GDoT.
