We'll be driving up from Florida on I-75 to get to Alpharetta tomorrow afternoon. I know maps on line suggest going through Atlanta, and I've read advice here re 285 E vs W. The 400 runs next to our destination so I'll need to get to that vicinity. Given that by all accounts traffic in Atlanta is very congested, are there any other options other than the "worm tunnels" or a magic carpet? If not, what route is currently best? I'm okay with a state rd if it moves. And, yes, I will listen to radio reports and be prepared to adjust based on conditions, but I'd like your expert advice so I can avoid as much hassle as possible. The other option for us is to drive through the metro area Friday around 10:30 a.m. if that will be significantly better. Thanks!

It is hard to find the words to express just how much better driving through on Friday at 10:30 am would be compared to Thursday afternoon! Avoid the afternoon drive through the city if at all possible!!!

Depends on your definition of "afternoon"- if you're heading through town anytime before 4pm, I'd just take 75 to 85 to 400 and you'll be fine. Even up to 5pm it won't be too painful. I wouldn't recommend 285 E or W, as the interchange with 400 is a disaster.

Thanks. I thought Friday might be better, but do you have a suggestion for where to stop overnight that would put us with about a 1 hr drive? I still need help with by-pass options. Both Google and Yahoo go through Atlanta on I-75, But when I look at the map, 675 might be better. Or? Thanks again.

Any good hotel in the Macon area would be a good overnight stop about 1hr from Atlanta.

Thanks, BobK, I hadn't seen your reply. If we can make it by 5, I guess 75 will be most direct. Galounger, Macon might be too far from Alpharetta. If we must stop, I'd like to get right outside Atlanta. In checking the threads, the south side may have dangerous spots which I why I asked for overnight recommendations. Doesn't have to be highend, just in a very safe area. Stockbridge? I know PTC is terrific, but seems a little too far west for easy access.
