Cabbagetown's beloved Little's Food Store, which opened in 1929, is closing at the end of this year. There are very few places like this left in Atlanta. Apparently the building is in need of structural repairs and the owner of the building is elderly and unable to manage the repair costs. Because of this, the current owners of the store have decided to try to raise funds for the repairs on behalf of the owner, which will allow a historic building to be repaired and the business to reopen sometime next year.

Why? Do you only use it only as a cut-through? If so, there are numerous better alternatives. It's a great street if you get out of your car and spend some time there.

Your right, I have only driven down it once by accident. It certainly isn't a through street! Seems like it should be a one way.

BTW, there is nothing wrong with that. Using the term hate very lightly there.

I always thought Carroll St was one good example of what we should want more places in Atlanta to be like in the middle of residential neighborhoods

Definitely. Every neighborhood would do well to have a place to walk to that offers a variety of goods and services.

Lots of people use it as a through street, but it doesn't function well as one. If you HAVE TO cut through Cabbagetown, there are much better routes. Making Carroll Street a one-way would improve flow, but it might cut down on the visibility of the businesses there. That's the only reason I can think of that the neighborhood hasn't seriously considered it.

Has the gentrification of Cabbagetown been a plus or a minus for these old shops?

I'm sure this is somehow Wal-Mart's fault.

Hard to say. I'm sure Little's main profit drivers weren't fine wine and craft beer in 1929 as it seems to be now. Other than the walls and ceiling, there is little resemblance between the store as it is today, and the store it was when it was opened.

On the other hand, having a neighborhood mostly full of middle class (or higher) folks provides a base of customers that can afford to support stores like this.

Prior to Cabbagetown's gentrification, there were a number of small convenience stores in the neighborhood. Now there is only one.
