What is everyone thoughts on self check out lanes in stores?

Home depot has them, Publix, Kroger and Walmart..

Just left a brand new walmart, to see 1 lady being run to death, running 8 separate check out lanes.

At this rate, 1 job to 8 registers, you can lay off 7 other cashiers.

Well that is generally what happens, especially as minimum wages go up - staff levels go down as they are replaced with technology. Look at Europe. We have huge staff levels at fast food restaurants compared to them because their min wages are so high it makes more sense to use technology instead. Remember its a business with very low margins so you have to do what you can to compete and stay in business.

In my experience there is typically some combination of operator error and equipment malfunction requiring an employee (or two) to assist thus leaving the "manned" register unmanned. Come to think of it, it's a perfect solution for our government services.....

Costco also has them.

You know me, Mr. Pessimist....it just always seems that when I have a single item, I am stuck in huge lines behind people with cart loads and the self-checkout machines are all roped off. And when I have a cart full of items that I really don't want to scan and bag myself, only the self-checkouts are open.

I think they should be like express lanes. Only use them if you have 12 or fewer items that have bar codes on them. Please don't sit there and look up produce on them, it takes forever. Honestly, I'm amazed shrinkage from theft hasn't forced most of these down, it seems really easy to sneak something into a bag and act like you scanned and paid for it.

The 'bag area' is a big scale. To heavy (extra Items) its stops and prompts the self-serv area casher to come over, and 'clear' it.Each item has is weighed (and is assigend to the barcode) so as you scan things it won't let you do the next one till it in the bag area (scale). So "It" know how much every thing you scan should weight.

I choice to use the 'staffed' lines instead of the self-check out lines to prevent someone from being replaced by technology.

I always use the regular check-out and never the self-checkout. If I'm paying the prices that most of these stores charge then I am using what is provided. Also, I'm lazy. Murica!

For a minute Wal-Mart closed down all self-checkouts in some metro Atlanta stores. They added more and newer machines, and also changed the setup of how the machines are placed. Now the cashier can stand in the opening and view all machines. I just hate to see people with a cart full of $#%^ holding up a self-checkout machine.

Economics fail. The minimum wage is at its lowest real level in decades, yet workers are being removed. Automating their jobs has nothing to do with the minimum wage.
