We are looking for a lake vacation destination in the south and are looking at Lake Lanier and Lake Oconee. We have a 12 and 14 year old, and we will rent a house and will mainly waterski and golf. Which of these lakes is better and less crowded in early June? Thanks!

No contest at all. Lake Oconee never seems crowded, even on a hot August weekend. But, there isn't much to do there except golf and the lake. If you find a rental at Reynold's Plantation (not sure if private rentals are allowed there) there are a couple of clubhouses with nice pools, including one with water slides, as well as 4 (?) or 6 golf courses.

Lake Lanier get very, very crowded. It also has a water park. The lake levels have been extremely low this year, so keep that in mind. The last time I was at Oconee was this past August, and the lake levels there were fine.

Much better golf in Oconee, granted, at a higher price as well.

There are private home rentals available on Oconee through vrbo.com.
I agree with the concensus that its a great vacation destination. The Ritz-Carlton is fabulous.

I have spent a lot of time on both of these lakes.I grew up in the Atl area and went to Lake Lanier often.
Have relatives that live on Oconee and I have built a house there.
In my opinion the north end of Lanier is much nicer. The water is deeper, clearer and much cooler in summer.Lake Oconee is always muddy, shallow and like bathwater in summer.

I haven't been to Oconee, but would think with all the activity around Lake Lanier the 12 and 14 year old might stand to have a better time there.

I do, too.
I thought rustyrooster brought up an interesting point as well.
