We need quite a bit of new carpet. I'd like a decent quality but not expensive, as we hope to sell our home in a year or so. Any advice on where to buy it?

Home Depot usually have good deals on carpets. This is what my Mother said as she has worked in the carpet industry (Shaw Industries Inc) for years.

Consider a trip to the outlets in Dalton.

The outlets in the Dalton area would be good if you know anyone in the carpet industry that have employee discount cards. They would have to go with or meet you there to show their cards to get carpets/hardfloors/etc cheaper for you.

I did that one year, did not save enough money to make the trip worth it. The time and money if you want to make more than one trip is exhausting. Then you have to get someone to install the carpet which they charge you extra for picking up the carpet.

Most carpet have 8 plus year warranty. If you have a problem it is so easy at Home Depot or Lowes to make you claim - they handle everything.

Do your homework.
Although all the previous posters mentioned the big box stores- they may or maynot be the best choice. They advertise a whole house install for some ridiculous low price of less than a hundred dollars. I can assure you that an install crew of three is getting more than that for installing. So the money has to come from somewhere!

We live in the state that's the world capital for carpet- meaning a trip to Dalton could be worth while- if you did your homework. All of the outlets up there have contacts with local(metro area) installers that can pickup and install. And there is an abundant amount of local dealers/showrooms/galleries that deal with all kinds of flooring- a lot of times you can get a "better deal" with them because they are competing with the big boxes.

Where you really save money is in what you can do prior to the carpet going in-
Removing and disposing of old carpet and pad
Removing any or all old or damaged tack strip
Moving furniture
All of these things are figured into a re-carpeting job.
