Google Maps

what's the history behind this weird blue tower off of the tracks in adair park on murphy street (what peachtree street turns into)?

i used to think it was some kind of a smokestack, or if not that, some kind of metal put-up job that has been left there a very long time. after driving up closer to it, i realized that the tower has windows and rooms in the bottom of it. there are also metal spindles coming off the top of it— did it ever hold something or have a larger superstructure to it?

by the way, i do know that the warehouse it sits next to is now an art gallery called 'the metropolitan'. but that's all the information i can gather on this unique structure.

anyone have any ideas?

It's known as the Candler Warehouse. The whole property, not just that tower. This 40 acre facility was built by Asa Candler in 1922 to house cotton helping to revive the industry in Georgia. Now converted to lofts, offices and studios.

Here's a link to a historical photo... Atlanta History Center Album. Candler Warehouse

One of my cousins actually did reside in it once and used it as his studio. Such an eerie structure.

Here's another photo of it and some more info showing it when it was freshly painted and had flags on the top.

I work there as a security guard. It's a mixed use center of warehouses and lofts. The tower is actually the "home" of a female artist.

Default Actually...

An artist and DJ, Mitch Cherry, lives there with his architect wife Emmye. They also have the gallery space next door (called the Blue Tower Gallery). There are four levels, and all are very cool--kitchen and bathroom, first floor, bedroom and office second, dj booth/practice space/office on third, and another bedroom / party room on the fourth floor.

Thanks to you all here for all of this helpful & informative info!
I rode the train in & out of town yesterday & as always had a great view of the structure.
The tower sits in an interesting looking area & I made a mental note to do some more exploration of it soon. I have been in the general area many a time & it really is not at all a frightening place, but rather it's one that is basically unknown to most of us.
