anyone know if any of the westside neighbourhoods are coming back up, or are safe?
i'm checking out whittier mill and riverside soon, i hear that's supposed to have gotten a lot better.
bluff is a no-go.
vine city looks promising, but it looks like there's a lack of investment going into it. it feels like an area that's been relieved of a lot of the bad crime, and is just waiting for a revitalization, just nobody's willing to open up a store in there yet (ie: the new building @ magnolia/vine).
anybody know about west lake, grove park, hunter hills?
Whittier Mill Village is great and Riverside is right up there near us, in my obviously biased opinion as a 10 year very, very happy resident of WMV Drive through once and you will agree! We hardly ever have any crime, and it has been this way since before I even moved here 10 years ago. Riverside has a bit more than us, but again we have almost zero, so that is still not much. I think Riverside is as safe as any comparable intown neighborhood. We also have a private security patrol that patrols WMV, Riverside, and Vinings on the Chattahoochee, which is in between WMV and Riverside. Of course, WMV is way more expensive than most of the other neighborhoods you mentioned, but due to the housing market, there are still some deals sometimes. Right now you can get a home for just above $100,000 that needs a total renovation, or a renovated 2/2.5 for $225,000 or a 3/2.5 with a finished basement for $299,000. Riverside prices are all over the place and there are still foreclosures and short sales there a lot, so you can get a good deal.
Well, good luck with your search.
anyone who hasn't checked this out really needs to. it's like a small country town, like madison, georgia or something. no traffic, it's like a little haven inside the perimeter. i was expecting it to be a little ghetto, but no way— no weirdos hanging out in the streets, no graffiti, i felt completely safe. it's quieter than MOST of the suburbs. it's so strange that the westside ITP is so RURAL!
Yes. There are many former crack houses for sale on the cheap. Prostitution and drug sales are rampant in the area which could be a selling point for some.

pfft
no really, you should check it out, magnolia street especially, and sunset avenue. there are some beautiful historic homes and the drug dealing/prostitution seems to have receded across simpson. the AUC and westside village have really brought some life back to vine city— but in the actual residential section, it's very quiet. most of the burned out s**tholes have been torn down, and historical homes remain, and the crime seems to have moved somewhat. it's just waiting for a great revival.

I love how the Westside ITP has that rural/country feel. So Atlanta, So Southern!
What can we call it? Atlanta Southern Urban-Country Chic?

I work down near there. I agree it isn't as bad as it used to be and some progress has been made, but it still isn't a place I would choose to live. You can live there very cheaply, but it is still not far at all from areas that are awful.

I feel the same way when I'm in Whittier Mill -- it's like I'm transported to a mountain town far from the city. Such a cute place. I do wish there was more retail stuff nearby, but I think that could come in time. My favorite thing about is the incredible park there. It's a really beautiful place to be on a sunny day especially with the greenery of spring and summer.
It's not that far west, but Howell Station off of West Marietta Blvd is worth a mention because it's got that same mountain town feel to it.
I'm glad to know you're seeing some good things happening in Vine City! I've got high hopes for that neighborhood. I haven't visited it in a couple of years -- I'll take a look.
There is a lack of retail and grocery options in the westside. Until that is solved redevelopment will be a hard, uphill battle.
True, but Walmart is coming, for better or worse. I hate Walmart with a passion, but I honestly have no problems with them coming to Vine City, along with a police station.
