Are there any mixed-use (large planned retail, housing) developments, such as Birkdale Village in Charlotte. Or any massive outdoor retail complexes such as those found in Dallas similar to Firewheel, in Metro Atlanta?

Atlantic Station is pretty much the king of planned mixed use communities. There are also some lower key ones like Glenwood Park and Inman Park Village.

We have alot of mixed use planning throughout the metro Atlanta. It has sort of been a national building trend. They occur in many different ways though. Some similar to the places you mentioned, but some very different through better zoning plans.

The big one is Atlantic Station, which was mentioned. The Atlanta Regional Commission has a large program called the Livable Centers Initiative (LCI), which is geared at making smart well planned government infrastructure investment in limited areas/corridors along side with smart zoning decisions to facilitate redevelopment. Many of these centers have taken off, many of them are just beginning, and many haven't gone very far.

As far as the open air malls... we have many... some with mixed use... some without.

Some of the things that pop into my head....

The Avenue at Webb Ginn norcross, ga - Google Maps

The Forum at Peachtree in Norcross norcross, ga - Google Maps

Newnan Crossing norcross, ga - Google Maps

Ashford Crossing/Targer norcross, ga - Google Maps

Transit Oriented Develpment at Lindbergh station norcross, ga - Google Maps

I'd also like to point out... there has been a big change from many common big box retailers giving their own spin on mixed use development.

Even from wal-marts and Targets with direct connection to adjacent condo/apartment buildings. Plenty use of parking decks or below store parking.

Alot of Suburan areas are pushing mandated interparcel access zoning policies (an adjacent townhome development or apartment complex has vehicle and pedestrian access to the strip malls w/o entering the road way.

Some newer suburban communities that don't have an old town center are inventing new ones with use of the LCI program/mixed use development

P.S. sorry all the links say Norcross... These are not all in Norcross.

Colony Square was the first mixed use in the southeast when it was built in the 1970's.

Thanks all. I knew about Atlantic Station but for some reason did not think of it as such, since it is so much a part of the urban fabric. Is there anthig like Dallas' Firewheel Town Center?
