Hi everyone,

I've been scouting for rental properties around EAV and I noticed there are a few pretty enticing rentals east of EAV and south of East Lake. Is this area decent? I am a woman in my early 30s and I wanted to know if it would be a safe area to rent. I have a limited amount of time to tour rental properties, and I didn't want to waste my time on areas that aren't safe...

Thanks so much!

I live in that area, albeit in a newer subdivision. It really depends on the exact area and neighborhood...the area has improved significantly since I first moved down here in 2007. That said, the subdivision I'm in is dead ended so it keeps out a lot of transients and people looking for cut throughs (who are also sometimes looking for things to steal). Send me a DM if you know the property address and I could tell you more about it.

VJP said exactly what I would have.

One consideration: is this unincorporated DeKalb, or is it within the city limits of Atlanta? If it is unincorporated DeKalb, I would pass, mostly because those areas (Gresham Park, Glenwood Road, Candler-McAfee) have seen very little gentrification compared to areas nearby that are within Atlanta. I am not sure why that is the case, but I would guess it has to do with the percieved level of services and safety in Atlanta.

Thanks so much for the responses. I saw a few rentals in 2 specific areas:

1) Bound by I-20 on west, Glenwood on north, and Fayetteville Road on the southeast side.
2) 2nd Ave on the west, McAfee south, Candler Road on the eastside, and Glenwood as the northern border.

Thanks!!!

Yeah, those areas really you can almost go street by street. I lived in Belvedere Park for about 10 years. I moved because I got married and my wife's house is in the middle of where we both work (she works near Alpharetta and I work downtown). I really do miss the 15 minute commute though (now it's like an hour + both ways. Ugh!). Most crimes are related to drugs and theft. A good thing to makes sure is if the houses around you are occupied. Having more people around is better for safety. I'd make sure the place at least has an alarm. I also don't really know why those areas south of Memorial are worse than the ones just north of it. Most of the houses are just as nice and just as close to everything else. Maybe mostly due to zip code. Are you going to have any roommates?
