Hi all -

First post here. My husband has been offered a promotion which would mean we need to move up to Atlanta. His job is in Peachtree City, but neither of us are big on the suburban feel there - not that it is bad, just not us.

We tend to prefer a more urban, walkable area, but I do not want his commute to be a complete disaster.

We did drive up to Atlantic Station (hotel told us it was nice), but, at least where we were, it just has a "Let's slap some lofts above a shopping center" kind of feel - just doesn't feel authentic. There may be more around there that we are unaware of...

We love an area with interesting bistros, coffeehouses, maybe some art galleries - definitely love culturally diverse, interesting, and walkable places.

We can rent or buy and are not overly concerned about pricing. We could probably spend up to $450,000 for a house, or $2500 in rent or so. Again, would love to know more about how bad a commute would be in the morning and evening for my husband from any area to Peachtree City.

We have to make a decision on whether he takes the job or not today, so any and all help would be incredibly appreciated!

Thank you so much in advance!!!

) Tara

One suggestion is Decatur>>>
City of Decatur, GA

Progressive community, walkable, many shops and restaurants--about 5 miles from Midtown/downtown Atlanta with many more cultural opportunities.

The VA Highland area is another option and the neighborhoods of Midtown.

This thread has some good descriptions of intown areas >>>
https://www.city-data.com/forum/atlan...ggestions.html

The commute would be approximately 30-45 minutes --a reverse commute.

Peachtree City is south of the airport but this should give a general idea>>>

Default Thank you so much...

Hi Take A Hike -

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your quick, well-researched response! We were so stressed out all weekend trying to figure out what in the heck we should do here, and they only gave my husband 3 days to decide on the job - major life change, yeah, so here, think about it for 3 days. LOL

I will go and check the info out now. I am so grateful for your help.

Hope you are having a beautiful day!
Tara

Keep checking the thread--there are a number of other posters with more knowledge of the areas and I'm certain they can offer additional suggestions.

lol--It's cloudy today--cheering madly--should be cooler--and that will be a Great Day. heat and humidity must go away!

I think you would really enjoy living intown. Lots of good places to eat for one thing. Try the 'Flying Biscuit' if you are looking in the area.

Good luck.

Along with Take's suggestions, I would recommend, albeit a bias one, my neighborhood of Inman Park.

Here are some websites for you to explore:
www.inmanpark.org
www.inmanparkvillage.com

Inman Park Restaurant Week is coming back in late September. Check out the number of varied restaurants we have in the neighborhood: Inman Park Restaurant Week – Sept 20th-26th, 2010

And the best neighborhood festival in the city - Inman Park Festival

Depending on what you are expecting/looking for in a home/condo, you might be able to find something in your price range. Good luck!

Based on these criteria, I'd also recommend White Provision in Midtown West (White Provision). Lots of non-chain local restaurants, diner/coffee, art galleries around there. Castleberry Hill might also be good for you.

BTW, I agree with you about Atlantic Station. It's growing on me, but the architecture of the whole area feels so "Disney" to me.

Inman Park and Decatur are also good suggestions for you, but I wonder what the commute to Peachtree C. would be like from Decatur?

Decatur is WONDERFUL, but the commute to Peachtree City would probably be horrendous. I imagine he should have a reverse commute much of the way, but through town will be terrible. Inman Park or Virginia-Highland would both be a little easier because they have quicker access to I-75/85. Candler Park is also a good option with quick access to the expressway.

Hi all!! You guys are the best! This is just simply the most helpful community I have ever seen. We are going to take the job, thanks to your feedback, and I am going to go and check out the areas you have all suggested.

Take a Hike - thanks for restaurant suggestion! Sounds awesome and right down our alley.

George - we were just looking at - and being impressed by - Inman Park. Looks like a great fit for us - maybe we will be neighbors! )

K-Saw - LOL - that is exactly what I said about Atlantic Station - very Disney. ) Thanks for the awesome suggestion on the White Provision! Will check out now.

IntownHomes - thanks so much for the heads up on the commute! Will definitely check out those areas - I truly do not want my hubby to have a terrible commute. We're willing to deal with a commute for an urban area for sure, but not a soul-crushing one. LOL

Thank you all so very much. I am soooo grateful to you - I just don't know Atlanta well, although I have always liked what I saw there. These suggestions are tremendously excellent.

Have a beautiful day!! ) Tara

Downtown East Point and the College Park historic district are also good choices and much closer to Peachtree City relatively speaking. Both have up and coming urban villages in their centers, both on MARTA, and tons of historic late Victorians and bungalows to choose from. Oh, and no City of Atlanta taxes

Hi waronxmas!

Thanks so much for these suggestions - I was completely unaware of them, and they are, indeed, closer to Peachtree.

What's the safety situation or crime situation in those areas? Have lived in up and coming neighborhoods a couple of times and they can be great, but are usually a little less safe. Is that true here as well?

Thanks again!!!

Tara
