- good points. Here in California, there are many interracial marriages between Korean women and non-Korean men. Several of my friends (Caucasian, African-American, Chinese-American) have wed Korean females.

I think that's part of the problem as well.
In Korea, there is a severe female shortage. They've aborted many of the females, in favor of male children. So, I think when the fewer women around choose international, it means even less females in Korea.
Also, as others have noted on the thread, Korea is very male-oriented. It is not uncommon for brothers to boss their sisters around, as if their sister was a maid - i.e. 'Make me a sandwich'.
When I lived in Korea, MANY of my female students would complain that just by being in an office as a female, many men just ordered them to go get them a coffee.
In the heirarchy system, a younger person basically has to do most of what an older person says. I have seen on a large number of occassions where Korean guys order females to 'drink more' to the extent that the woman is vomiting all over the place, and has to be carried out of a drinking establishment.
When, in contrast, a Korean female realizes that most non-Korean males don't demand any of this whatsoever...
I can't say i have ever experienced any open hostility from other men in Korea, the people who seem to get worked up most about my wife and I are little old ladies.

Really, this is a problem in Korea as well? (gender imbalance) I suppose Korea has only recently been in the same league as Japan or Singapore, so it's not too surprising. I mean you don't have this problem in Taiwan or Singapore, I think in some ways would you agree people in these countries, especially Singapore, are more westernised and females are more equal? In Singapore particularly I think the sexes pretty much relate how they do in the West.
As far as the office environment, I think Korea is in the process of adjusting gender roles. I worked at Samsung Engineering in a mixed culture office. Of course it was male dominated but females were there doing mostly jobs considered for females such as administrative assistance, document management, etc. but I didn't see the men verbally abusing the females much and when they did, the females would cry or run out of the office screaming.
If any of the girls became too friendly with a foreigner, she would be teased by the Korean men.

Yep, still sounds like the 50s. Korea is so modern one wouldn't expect that at all.
Things are moving fast in Korea now with their economic boom...eventually they will adjust as more foreign tourists vists, thus a change in attitude by the younger generation of men and women...many Americans/foreigners are working, teaching, etc. in Korea than previously, so it won't be quite a 'shock' to see inter-racial couples. As Korean women get more higher level jobs, you will also see the men change...the prosperity of Korea will bring about changes socially.
I didnt know they got upset? I know that Koreans dating outside of their race is still kinda taboo in South Korea to a certain extent so I can only imagine maybe this has something to do with it.
they do get upset. korean men like to think their bride is a virgin. so the virgin-izing surgery used to be popular in korea a few years ago. it's still secretly quite popular. having said that, they think foreign men have crazier sex life than koreans. so if korean woman is dating a foreigner, they automatically assume she is promiscuous and dirty. and the foreigner is considered to be the contaminator. if that foreign guy is darker skinned, they would express even more disgust.
you are right about the taboo. generally speaking, they are the most nationalistic people i know. (the phrase 'generally speaking' works in korea because the culture is extremely homogenous beyond the level of conformity but homogenous.)
they are prejudiced about half blood people. but if you are a beautiful half blood, they would worship you. after all, korea is a materialistic country. they judge people based on their appearance more than in LA. so if you look good, all is forgiven.
Some people are fiercely intolerant and disapprove of dating 'outside their race'. I have heard as many balck people express this disapproval as I have witnessed white, latin and asian people demonstrating it. Some people are also elitist and feel that interracial mating dilutes or even contaminates their lineage.
