I'm a proud "damned yankee" and shoulda known better, after 20 + years in TN.

Can our "ravine" be considered a "holler", beause it's never deeper than close to 7' deep. And yep, that's a serious question! I promise!

IMHO, if it runs for any distance, I don't see why not. It could also be a ditch. If it's 7 feet deep, how wide is it?

Not sure how wide it is. Looks like we'll be going back out there in the next week, so I'll do some measuring and picture taking of it.

Would have done that on our last visit but that's were we had the burn pile located.

You know the old saying about the Ozarks: "It's not how high the mountains are, it's how deep the valleys are."

I grew up in Cave City, and I've always believe the term "holler" is kind of like a valley, except it's not really between mountains. It's derived from the term "hollow" or "the hollows", meaning a deep, low place.

I lived in Cave City until I was 13 or so. I lived behind what was called "Green Acres"... back near the lakes.

I can't give you much more info other than it's a really pretty area and (as a kid) I liked the schools, and think the education system there is pretty spot-on, considering they had us kids writing essays to be graded by the state by the time we were in 2nd grade.

Another thing about the Caves and such... I was told that the old white house next to Cave Court was part of the underground railroad... I guess I'll start a new thread to see if there's anything to that tale.

Also, the Ozarks as a whole is honeycombed with cave systems. There are well-known caves out West of Cave City in which the area was a popular picnic spot for a long time, although I believe someone bought the property and built a house on it... :S

If you like caves and such, I'd recommend visiting Grand Gulf State Park in Thayer, MO which is just barely across the AR/MO state line, directly north of Mammoth Spring State Park. It's pretty cool.

And of course is Blanchard Caverns if you're up for a little drive. It's certainly a "to do" if you like caves and such.
