I was wondering if someone could explain what exactly a Community Pool is?
Is it a pool that each neighborhood shares? Are they clean?
We are debating buying a house w/a pool because we have an infant, but would like to have access to a pool...seems like most neighborhoods offer these.

Yes, they are a pool that the community shares. This would be the safer option when you have children around. If you want to have more privacy, then have a private pool in your backyard. And actually most neighborhoods don't have community pools. It's much more common to have one in your backyard instead. And from the community ones that I have seen they always looked clean.

My neighborhood has three community pools. Yes, three of them! They are all clean and well taken care of. That is one of the things HOA fees are used for.

Green Valley (26,000 people) has 12 rec centers with pools at each. The yearly fee for everything at the rec centers is under $400.00 a year!

You can also join a private pool. For example, in Oro Valley (Tucson), you can join the El Conquistador pool and tennis club. We did not want a pool with young children, and were not interested in the communities we saw with community pools. We ended up buying in Oro Valley and joining the El Conquistador.

Our subdivision has a community pool, too. It's very well taken care of and only residents of our subdivision have the key to get into it. At one point, they even posted online (I don't remember if it was the Maricopa county website or the city of Surprise website), but they had the inspections and scores of all community and public pools in the area.

Our HOA has three pools, very well kept and one is heated for year-round use. Also tennis and basketball courts adjacent to all three. Gated to keep out the Newport Beach, CA riff-raff. No lifeguards so it's not like going to the city pool or the Y. But very convenient, and w/o the hassle of maintaining your own pool, plus you have room in your backyard for other things. Besides, community pools help reduce the wasting of water in the desert... considering that 99% of backyard pools are unused 99% of the time, it's just a waste.

What are HOA fees? I'm considering buying a condo/townhouse and where I live now we have what are called maintenance fees - a monthly amount each homeowner pays to cover things like pools, recreation facilities, etc. I've viewed thousand of condo/townhome listings in the greater Phoenix area and none indicate how much "condo" fees are. I would love to learn how this works in Arizona if anyone has experience with it.
