I have recently found out that I have developed severe asthma here in Yuma. I have found out that everytime I am too close to the fields, I have a severe asthma attack. By too close, I mean that I can't even take driving on roads that run right next to the fields. I once nearly passed out during an attack. I am also allergic to dust so when it is windy, my asthma is worse. I don't know what to do. I am a teacher and I have learned that teaching jobs in other parts of the country are difficult to find. I also want to be able to help the kids I am currently teaching.

If you don't mind a few strange looks, why not try using a particulate air respirator when driving by the fields? The HEPA filters cost a little more, but are very effective. They can be obtained at any building supplies store, or ordered direct though companies such as 3M. I used to buy them a box at a time, and found them to be very useful when cleaning an attic, sanding, sweeping, etc..

I also developed breathing problems in the 10 months I have been here and I am NOT staying for this reason. I live in an area close to the fields. I was a runner before coming here and start wheezing if I try to run near the fields.

I am told pesticides not allowed to be used elsewhere are allowed to be used as restricted use pesticides in Yuma County.

The thread title from this five year old thread talked about pesticides, but the OP said nothing about pesticides in this post. They may be assuming that pesticides are the issue, but they may not be.

Before you start spreading the information "you've been told", you might want to get some facts or post the source of your information. Sorry you are having this problem, whatever the cause.

Plants in the fields also put out pollen, etc., which is a big cause of Asthma attacks.
