Hi,

My spouse has gotten a position in Plymouth and we are thinking of moving to Ann Arbor for various reasons, including the diversity in things to do, restaurants, etc., and we also think that it is a safer real estate hedge than the Detroit suburbs given that we tend to move a lot. Hopefully we will be staying put for a really long time this move though. My question is - We are in our 40's with a middle school aged child and we are wondering what areas of Ann Arbor would be good to look at for housing and what areas we should avoid, ie, too many drunken college students? We are looking at spending up to $650000 and that could be for the house or we would be willing to buy a smaller much cheaper place and put an addition on. Could someone list all of the areas we should look at and those we should avoid? Thank you for your time and consideration.

Ideally, we would like to spend less than the aforementioned figure, we are not sure of house pricing and property taxes there. We would go that high if we need to. Thanks again.

For that price, you will have no problem getting a very nice home in the Plymouth or Ann Arbor area.

If you want to avoid students, then really that would just be the heart of downtown.

Westside (west of Main St. especially Bach and Eberwhite areas) is very family oriented and you can walk downtown from it. The houses are older and have a lot character.
Burns park (east of Main) is more expensive, but also closer to students. This area is also filled with older, charming homes.
See here: Ann Arbor Neighborhoods - Burns Park
and here: Ann Arbor Neighborhoods - Bach
Ann Arbor Neighborhoods - Eberwhite

Both Westside and Burns park are in central A2 - close to the campus and downtown.

If you want to be farther away, Barton Hills (in north west ann arbor) may be an option for you.
Its upscale and in a beautiful, secluded area of Ann Arbor.

I would avoid (just due to personal taste), the Stone School/Carpenter area and parts of Packard. There you will find less of a neighborhood feel and the schools arent as good, imo.
