I live in Toledo Ohio, and have lived there my entire life. However, due to lack of jobs, I had to expand my search. Believe it or not, there's more jobs in the Ann Arbor/Detroit area than Toledo.

So, I have an opportunity in Chelsea, MI (close to Ann Arbor) and Royal Oak, MI. Whichever one I choose, I'll be relocating closer to in the near future. Are there any major differences between these 2 areas? I've worked in downtown Detroit before (on the outer edge of downtown detroit, near the old Tiger stadium) and absolutely hated it. I've been to Ann Arbor before and really like it. Royal Oak seems nice, but I'm nervous it's too close to downtown Detroit.

I'm in my upper 20's and a family man with 1 child (toddler) and would like to move to an area that is a good neighborhood with good schools and lots of family friendly activities.

Any thoughts? I'd appreciate it.

Agree..Chelsea is very nice! Pinkney State recreation area and Waterloo state recreation area are right there, which may be the largest forested area in that vacinity. They are very nice places to chill out. Camp, fish, hike..bike or whatever!

First off, I absolutely believe that there are more jobs here in SE Michigan than in Toledo. My hubby and I are both originally from that area and you're right, there are absolutely zero jobs. I'm not sure what's happening with Toledo, but when SE Michigan has a better economy, then you know it can't be anything very good.

Anyway, if you hated Detroit when you worked there before and you want a safe, family friendly area, then Chelsea is your town. What it lacks in excitement and nightlife it more than makes up for in safety and small town atmosphere. I have to go there several times a week for work and I absolutely love it. If I didn't already live in a safe, small town that is closer to our families, then I wouldn't mind moving there. Besides, if you want things to do, then Ann Arbor is only minutes away, and there's always something to do there 24/7.

Personally, I don't get all the hype about Royal Oak, but I realize that everyone is different. For me, it is still way too close to Detroit and I see things on the news from time to time that tell me that it isn't remotely as safe as a place like Chelsea would be. However, I am a small town girl born and raised and I just feel better when I can live close enough to visit the big city to do things but can leave and forget about it when I want to as well.
