Alaska is not a nanny state. If you're used to Cali governmental/NGO largesse then Alaska will be very disappointing to you. If you're low income, you will find life here very difficult. My advice is to stay put where you are.

I have to agree... When it's 20 below zero in January you don't want to not be able to pay your Enstar & MEA bill...

This. This. This.

I wish I could upvote this more.

The differences between Alaska and California are vast. Alaska isn't a cheap place to live by far. Between buying an AWD/4WD vehicle, heating, electric (I have a heated driveway), and the cost of daily items at the grocery store, the expenses are sizable if you want to live comfortably.

If you're looking for welfare and low income family, stay in California.

The check should be in the mail soon. Because politicians always deliver on their promises.

My heating bill is also higher than what you guys are saying (I have two electric heat pumps ... an air source heat pump would be useless in Alaska). What sort of insulation do you have there? Mine's about R-60 in the attic, 19 in the walls, and the crawlspace is 25. Windows are double pane, high-e, argon filled.

Square footage of your house? A 900 sq ft house in Anchorage could still cost less to heat than a 1800 sq ft house in AL even if well insulated. There are inefficient layouts too. There are lots of ways the design can affect cost to heat. A house in AL might not be designed to hold heat IN but get excess heat OUT. Insulation isn't the only factor. A sprawling house may have a lot of exterior surface area exposed to cold but another design (such as building up instead of out) may minimize it. Window number and sizes, room sizes, ceiling heights, ability to collect passive solar energy, how heating and plumbing pipe/ductwork runs and how far, etc.

Default wow

I know this is an old thread, but wow this is so cheap. In California my bill used to get up to $1200 a month in the summer until I got solar. PG&E is killing us.

FWIW, the majority of the replies on this thread giving utility costs are years out of date.
