We found a very nice New Zealand pinot noir that's impressive tasting for its level of affordability. I tend to favor reds over whites, in general.

What's it called? I'm definitely a pinot fan.

2008 Yealands Estate Pinot Noir...under $20 a bottle, but apparently 91 points from Wine Spectator, for those who care about such things (I don't...my local wine shop apparently does, because the owner's the one who told me that when I told her how much I liked it).

My favourites are many of the big Aussie Reds we produce here in abundance - the Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignons. My favourite regions are South Australia's Barossa, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, etc. I also don't mind the reds from Victoria's Pyrenees and Heathcote regions.

My favourite "cheap" red is Penfold's Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet which sells regular price for $15 but we buy our wines by the dozen so we can get 20-30% off.

More premium wines I like are in the $35 and up range, and again they're reds like Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, or blends like Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre (GSM) and such.

Some of my favorites include: Argentinian Malbecs, Reislings that are not too sweet, Carmenere from Chile, French Champagne, Australian Shiraz ... and, as embarrassingly banal as this sounds: Merlot.

Merlot can be good. One of my favorite wines is Duckhorn Merlot. Great producer out of Napa.

Wine rating are a good way to judge the quality of what you are getting IMO. Just have to know who is rating and if you generally agree with that person.

I will definitely see if I can pick up a bottle of the Yealands. Getting a Pinot that is 90+ points under $20 is hard to do.

Yeah, previously, our favorite one was considerably more costly, and received as a gift.
