The conversation in the thread about housing near UNM and the Student Ghetto got me to reminiscing, and I wondered if anybody remembers the infamous Graffiti House. I think that it was located, roughly, near Stanford and Silver. The entire house was covered in Graffiti. There always appeared to be a lot of HS aged kids hanging around and one distracted mom type. I used to live on Columbia between Silver and Lead/Coal and I could always count on using the Graffiti House as a point of reference for pizza man, locksmith, new friends etc. I have to admit that they certainly weren't the worst neighbors I've had. In fact, that's the only ABQ address I've lived at and not experienced property crime--probably, because it was only a sixth month lease. (The landlord actually talked me out of a full year lease!) Anyhow, I was just wondering if anybody else on here remembered that place or had any personal experiences there. I think it was declared a nuisance property and was torn down in the late 90s, and there are some cookie cutter type duplexes there now. Does anybody want to join me on a trip down memory lane?
I wasn't living here in the 90s, so I've never seen this "Graffiti House," but I keep reading about the "Student Ghetto" on this forum, and I'm wondering if someone could define exactly where they think that is, because I've never thought of the area around UNM or CNM Main to be a "ghetto" by any means, and I would think this is where the highest concentration of students would be.

I wouldn't take the term ghetto too literally. The name just comes from the fact that there are a lot of crappy apartments with relatively low rent. Where I went to school, we had the Golden Ghetto, which was all the off-campus frat and sorority houses.
I've always known the Student Ghetto to be immediately south of Central from Girard to University. Like I stated in a previous thread, there are good blocks and good houses within there but I know more than a few people who moved into a low-end apartment or house there and quickly learned their possessions suddenly grew wings. This used to be a worse place back about 10 years ago but since the addition of the Bricklight District shops and condos and the shut-down of a brothel in the area (name inappropriate to post on this forum), that block looks better but still squirrely.

It was on the SE corner of Stanford and Silver.
At that location is now an apartment house with an iron
fence around it. I imagine that it was trashed inside.
I sure remember it. It was visually a blight, but generally speaking, not a nuisance.

A block down Princeton from campus. We had one guy in our group who'd heard about it and spilled the beans to everyone, poor bastard forgot 3 of of group were looking into a career in law enforcement.
Yes you are correct The Graffiti house was my house. & my Sons and many young kids who were runaways. i got a bad "Rap" but I NEVER will regret letting the Kids Graffitti Our House..especialy after what the City did too US..The Graffiti House is now gone ...saddly GREAT MEMORIES!! PEACE
You would be surprised The Student "Ghetto" is alive and filled with DIVERSITY it is NOT a "Ghetto" in terms of being all run down, in fact it is totaly different from the 1990's
