I am looking to move to the albany area also. What are the plus and minus factors to keep in mind. I am selling two businesses in PA to make this move north. I love the outdoors and the ADK's so that is one reason I am moving towards albany, but I wanted to know if I can get info on job market, jobs in demand, business opportunities, single women ratio, night life, etc. Recently broke off an engagement of 3.5 years and need to get away from PA. I am a white male 30 years old with two labradors. I love to snowboard, the outdoors, business, gambling, real estate, working out, and more. Looking to relocate for good. If anyone can help I would appreciate it! Thanks.

If I were single, I wouldn't be thrilled about living in the Capital Region. To me it's more family oriented especially if you're out in the suburbs like Guilderland, Delmar, Clifton Park, Niskayuna, etc. You could hang around the colleges and find some younger, single people. If I had to choose, given what you said, I'd say you might enjoy Saratoga Springs. Somewhere close to Broadway and the State Park is great for singles and people with dogs who enjoy the outdoors. It's super happening during track season. The only gambling I know of that's close by is at Racino, but that's sort of pseudo gambling(slots/horse race). For a full casino, Turning Stone is about 2 hours away.

Don't know what line of work you're in so it's hard to say how the job market is. In general, I don't think the area has been hit as hard as some other areas but I don't think it was ever booming either.

It's a nice area if you like cold weather. The area isn't crawling with single ladies, but there are always ladies looking for decent guys.

Before you sell your 2 businesses and move, you probably want to make sure you have a solid lead on a job in the area. Don't want to pick up and move to the Capital Region and find yourself without an income. Once the finances are set, I think you'll find this area to be quite nice. Possibly boring if you like to party.

Good luck!

Well, my boyfriend is getting ready to sell his business, and I'm thinking about selling my house with a great yard for dogs, so there are at least 2 things you can check off your list now! LOL! :-D

Seriously, the Albany area is great. We'd like to relocate someplace warmer, and the climate here for us is the one and only drawback. Albany has a great standard of living for an area its size. There's lots to do (IMO), with plenty of culture, free concerts during the summer, etc. We're literally surrounded by mountains - the 'Dacks, Berkshires, Catskills, Greens up in VT, plus NYC is a 2.5 hr train ride down the Hudson, which is a beautiful ride.

Personally, I prefer living in the 'burbs, as I like the quiet atmosphere. If you prefer a more city-feel, Albany itself has some nice areas, and some not-so-nice areas (like any city). With the dogs, I'm guessing you'd be better off out in the 'burbs. There's really no damper on dating that way, as it's a small enough area that any place you'd like to meet up with people will be within a 15-minute to half hour drive, (unless you head up Saratoga way, and then you'll have a longer drive to where most of the people are around here. That being said, Saratoga is lovely.)

As far as the singles scene, when I was single, I had pretty good success with online dating (Match.com). One of my co-workers met his wife that way, and another just starting dating a very nice girl. I found there were plenty of singles to be met that way.

Ditto on everything Cigarboo said about the track/gambling, and I'll add that friends of mine head over to CT to the Mohegan Sun from time to time, and other people I know take trips down to Atlantic City and Niagara Falls (which has a casino on the Canadian side.)

What kind of business are you in? That would make a difference about the jobs/businesses available.

I love the Albany area, but if you can live anywhere and want easy access to the Adirondacks, I'd suggest looking in the Queensbury area. It is 50 minutes north, by car. Do NOT do that, however, if you will be working in the Albany area, because the commute from the north is horrendous.

Yea I saw Dave a few times in saratoga, great time/concert. I am aware the adirondacks are potentially a hard life for a job, that is why I was thinking below like albany and surrounding. I currently own an indoor skatepark, a skateboard company, a skateboard hardware company, a skateboard griptape company, and I have another job. I would keep all the above except the 9-5 job. I plan on finding a 9-5 job in NY first then possibly look into a business or real estate. If anyone knows of any good places, I will take any suggestions. Thanks for the input.

My DD is a student residing in the heart of Albany (originally from the Philly area) and she LOVES it. Great nightlife in Albany, plus plenty of young (and young-ish ) singles. I've noticed on visits to her that the people are very friendly and the cost of living is relatively reasonable (compared to what we're used to.)

She met her boyfriend there, and I think when she graduates she'll be staying in Albany; it all worked out very well for her. Good luck to you!
