Well, I arrived in Ketchikan on July 5, 2008 after 10 days of driving from Kentucky. The worst time was the 2.5 days my family and I were in Canada. Since arriving, we were able to locate excellent housing at a reasonable rate, get moved in and are doing pretty good. WE LOVE IT HERE!!! Lots of great pics to share later. Still trying to adjust to time change--4 hours. Thanks to all the post from everyone I read before beginning our journey. Your input and suggestions were wonderful help. As time allows, (we are still tyring to dig out from all the BOXES stacked to the ceilings) I will post more.

Hi there scribe- happy to see that you made it- thats a long way to travel. I am curious as to what happened on those 2.5 days that you were in Canada to make it so horrible for you?

Heck, I moved my wife up (I came down and drove back up with her) from Seattle June '07. For the most part, we loved the ALCAN...but the one sour note was a motel clerk in Fort Nelson. Pets allowed, reservation made, etc and when he hears that we have two cats (males, neutered), he rants about how ALL cats "spray", etc. They accept "dogs only". Despite my assertion that my cats have never "sprayed"...uh, they've been neutered since they were kittens, friend, he continued with the "I don't know what I'm talking about".

We did get the room...one of the smelliest and most bare essentialed rooms I've ever had the pleasure to stay in (100lb dogs will do that to a room, bless their souls). I also REALLY wanted to wring his scrawny little neck. But between Rachel and our being in a foreign country, his neck won out.

However, up to and after that, I loved Canada...especially White Horse. Wish I could skip Fort Nelson when I ship out in a couple of years...maybe the ferry?

Its easy to skip Fort Nelson. Make it to Watson Lake and spend the night there. You can make it to Fort St. John in that day or farther.

Your right, Fort St. John is about three hours down the road. Probably well worth it since that one person so jaded me on one small area. Cest la vie

How did you like the ferry ride to Ketchikan? We returned just last night from driving down to the lower 48 to visit relatives. Was really hot and humid in N.Y., Ohio and CT. where we visited. Was glad to get back home here. I know what you mean about Canada; people are unfriendly and basically rude to Americans. Our next trip down to visit will be via airplane since I have no desire to spend any money or time in Canada again.
