I remember reading about native elders who said this whole oil thing and federal programs would end native culture and allows the dead beats to survive who would have ordinarily just froze or starve to death back in the day. Now they can just sit around and beat their wives and THAT is where alot of our stats are derived from, domestic violence from the idol that can just sit around can collect a check.

If they eliminated the villages from the violence stats Alaska would do alot better, far better than places like Illinois. Then if you took it a step further and removed Anchorage (behind closed doors domestic violence stats, or at least reported them separatly) you would have a very different picture.

When people are reading these stats their biggest concerns are stranger violence and property crimes, not some drunk disfunctional couple that get into a fight behind closed doors. People dont want to be randomly assulted/shot on the street or have their **** stolen, that is all, the rest is hype to try to make Alaska look bad.

The 8A status of native corps and the politcal pull of the big 3 have basicly held the state hostage in economic warfare forever now but thats a separate issue.
So if we are going to cherry pick areas to skew the data, shouldn't other states get that right too?

Some states might like in appilatia however those states have such large populations that the toothless hilly billys dont really skew the stats.

Once you get a large enough population base then groups like that dont have drastic sway like they do in Alaska. I suppose if you did then it would eventually end up being a failed state (like Lybia) in the absense of a full blown fed govt bail out.

Default Domestic abuse and sexual assault

Domestic abuse and sexual assault kinda go hand in hand with this. That too is through the roof and real bad for women here in Alaska.

I suppose the official state explanation is that Alaskans are just sexier than residents of other states.

But its by and large not stranger rape or stranger violence, the women have to get themselves into these situations. The real crime stats that people care about is stranger crime, because that means you are at risk no matter what choices you make. If I choose to be a shut in I don't want to have to worry about some drug addict kicking in my door to steal or stealing my car etc.

If you want to go to koots and get blasted and then get involved with other blasted people and stagger out on to the street and you get beat up, well I don't really care about that stat because you made that choice to put yourself in that situation.

There was a discussion on the Fairbanks Buy, Sell, & Scam page (which I only belong to for the purpose of reporting backyard breeders and other animal sales) where something was mentioned about possible solutions to the bad air quality. The ensuing discussion was pretty much an anger-driven barrage of barely of subliterate blaring about some plot to take away their "rights."

I just look at these things as 6th extinction events anymore.

Well, this can't surprise anyone.

I always find it interesting that wood burning is the solely named source of the problem, as if the fossil fuels we're burning for heat, electricity, and in vehicles aren't huge contributors.

Meanwhile, we still don't have a natural gas line. Well, even if we did, I'm not sure who could afford it.

There is nothing anybody can do to solve the air inversions in Fairbanks. Something else: while wood smoke may be a problem in some areas around the Fairbanks Borough (some areas of North Pole), so are the coal-burning power plants (3 in Fairbanks alone), and the number of oil-burning boilers and furnaces everywhere in the borough. What the borough officials are now taking about is to force home owners to burn #1 heating fuel, which in turn would increase the cost per gallon forty one cents over the already high price. in other words, home owners and businesses will have to put their act together and pay for the problem, while the public sector (local governments) can continue burning coal as usual.

Fairbanks is one of a few cities in the nation where air inversions are very common. I believe the Salt Lake also experiences air inversions.

^this.

Who in local government wants to **** off the coal or oil and gas industries by forcing this issue, especially in Alaska? It's a lot safer and easier to roll over and say that there's nothing we can do about those power plants, leaving the onus on homeowners and business owners.
